Report: Cruz, Giants should have deal done before camp
It will be interesting to see what kind of contract Victor Cruz has when the final details are wrapped up and it’s done because it appears that is what will happen.
No, Cruz does not have an agreement in place with the New York Giants at this point. But ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that it is expected a contract will be done before training camp begins later this month. The Giants have been optimistic for months about the chances of having Cruz, who sat out the team’s entire offseason program, happy with a long-term deal before camp opened.
Cruz signed his tender as a restricted free agent last month. It is worth $2.879 million but the belief is he did that just to avoid the team reducing the offer. Will Cruz be in the neighborhood of $8 million per year when a deal is done? He very well could be.
Keep in mind, the Giants also have to think about a way to lock up fellow wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. So, just because Cruz signs (and he hasn’t yet) doesn’t mean the Giants will be without receiver drama. There was rampant speculation Nicks missed portions of the voluntary offseason program because he was unhappy with his contract situation.
