Redskins G.M. Subject Of Media Scrutiny And Speculation
The Washington Post published an article by Mike Jones on February 9th, 2017. In the article Jones wrote this about the Redskins: “After two slow-developing draft classes and a couple of botched free agent shopping periods, McCloughan has Allen breathing down his neck. The team president wouldn’t let the general manager speak to reporters at the Senior Bowl, and word is, he won’t be permitted to do his usual interview session with local reporters at the combine either. Allen apparently wants McCloughan completely locked in on talent evaluation.”
I am sorry I missed that exclusive interview between Washington Redskins President Bruce Allen and Mike Jones, or was there one? Is Mike Jones making an assumption and printing his assumption as facts? Any proof support this?
On February 9th, Michael David Smith referenced the above Washington Post article in his piece at Pro Football talk, writing this: “General Manager Scot McCloughan has team President Bruce Allen breathing down his neck, the Washington Post reports. That includes Allen not allowing McCloughan to talk to reporters either at the Senior Bowl or at the Scouting Combine, where most general managers do talk to the media.”
So here we have two articles basically stating as fact that Bruce Allen has ordered, or put a “gag order” on General Manager Scot McCloughan but no interview with either Allen nor McCloughan, not any facts, statements by either, or witnesses.
Maybe I am “old school” but I do not think it is either ethical, professional or fair to make statements without any form of verification, proof, or facts. No wonder the public has a low opinion and most do not trust the media anymore.
Courtesy of Barstool Sports, ex-player Chris Cooley talked about the alleged “gag order” Bruce Allen supposedly put on General Manager Bruce Allen and then said this: “You start to wonder, what the hell is going on here?” Cooley asked. “And I start to look at this and say, ‘Do we not trust what Scot McCloughan is going to say to the media, and is that why he’s not allowed to talk to the media?’ And if we don’t trust what he’s going to say to the media, why don’t we trust what he’s going to say to the media?”
He’d add: “Now, if you look at the history of Scot McCloughan, I think the one thing that you’d immediately start to flush out as to why we don’t trust what he’s going to say is that he’s had a drinking problem over his entire career. And so you ask right away, is he drinking?”
No Chris, I would ask why you would say that over the radio. Any proof Chris? Any kind of proof? 80 proof,100 proof? McCloughan had any drunk driving arrests since he has been with our Washington Redskins the last two years or any drunk and disorderly incidents? Any witnesses seeing him drunk? In my opinion, this in an attack, pure hateful garbage and Chris Cooley has no class and should not be on owner Dan Snyder’s radio show. Chris needs a checkup from the neck up if he thinks what he said is appropriate.

No wonder there are allegations of FAKE NEWS and biased, hateful, even untrue stories in todays media. Even sportswriters say anything they want to say for a story with no proof, facts, statements, interviews, quotes, witnesses. Some newspapers need someone to set a moral standard of what is printed in their newspaper and demand honest, unbiased reporting. I want to see some facts, quotes, links, proof when I read something negative and hateful as “Bruce Allen put a gag order on GM Scot McCloughan.”
Obviously the writers are not fans of our Washington Redskins because in the piece at Pro Football Talk, the writer went on to say as if it were a fact “That report comes as part of a longer story that describes the team as “uneasy,” “nervous” and “desperate” after missing the playoffs last season.” The story suggests that there’s discord on a coaching staff that has lost both coordinators this offseason, that there’s disagreement about how valuable quarterback Kirk Cousins is, and that McCloughan, Allen and coach Jay Gruden could all be fired after the 2017 season if the team doesn’t improve.
So lets start off the 2017 season with negative articles and unprofessional sports radio hosts, analysts saying something inappropriate about our General Manager who has done a fantastic job since he has been here, Most who really know football would say our Redskins are a few defensive players away from being a championship team. Scot has give us two grade A drafts in his two years here and there is not reason to believe this expert wont get us another great draft.
I will believe Bruce Allen told Scot McCloughan not to talk to the butthurt press when I hear him say it or read it in an interview quoting him, or hear it from General Manager Scot McCloughan. If a writer wants to give his opinion, the he needs to make it clear to the reader “in my opinion, or I suspect Bruce Allen told Scot not to talk to us at the …” If the writer is going to write something as a fact, a truth, he should give some proof to show it is a fact, true.
Here is what I think. Our General Manager is not obligated to talk to the press, media before he has some transaction to report such as “Redskins signed …” or “Redskins and quarterback Kirk Cousins reached a longterm contract for …years and …millions per year, with ….guarantee.” Facts, transactions, things the fans and media need to know. I think he is busy as he can be scouting players who may be in the 2017 Draft, taking notes, talking to college coaches of the players who have caught his expert eye. Also think Scot is a smart negotiator and wont say anything to help greedy agents of players he needs to get under contract, or release. My source says the President Bruce Allen and General Manager Scot McCloughan work as a team, get along very well, and there is no “panic, discord, uneasiness, nervousness.”
I really hope the media will get it together and get back to being the professional, unbiased, factual reporters they used to be. If there is no story there, do not create one just to have a story. Some writers even invent some ficticious “source close to the situation, “anonymous source said..”
Moving along, Free Agency starts March 1st and we need a stonewall, penetrating, sure tackling, nasty nose tackle and there are some who will be available in Free Agency. I am sure General Manager Scot McCloughan is very interested in some of those players since our Redskins have failed to stop the run the last two seasons. That could be another reason he is too busy to babysit the press.
