Rangers fan hospitalized after being hit in the head by foul ball
Another baseball fan has been sent to the hospital after being hit with a foul ball. In the first inning of Sunday’s Texas Rangers game, a woman was cut and bleeding after being hit in the head.
The incident happened with Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun at the plate. Upon seeing the fan hit the ball, Calhoun crouched down at the plate briefly. He then took a while to make sure stadium employees made it to the fan. As Calhoun was waiting, he shook his head and eventually took a knee at the plate while the woman received attention.
The woman was escorted from the stands and reportedly taken to the hospital. Moments after being hit, the woman was bleeding from her forehead. There are some images which show the woman bleeding or covering her face with a towel. Be warned, they may be considered graphic.
There have been multiple incidents of fans being hit with foul balls this season. A 2-year-old fan suffered a skull fracture after being hit by a ball in May. A Los Angeles Dodgers fan was hit in June. A 3-year-old was hit by a line drive in July.
Many players have called on Major League Baseball to install protective netting down the first and third base lines at ballparks. Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor was among those players. He was at the plate when the ball hit the 3-year-old fan in July.
Some teams have responded, adding netting to their parks in 2019. The Chicago White Sox have done the most in that regard, adding netting all the way down to the foul poles on both sides of the field.
The Rangers were among the teams to announce netting for next season. The team is moving to a new park in 2020, and will have netting there. However, the team has not installed netting at Globe Life Park In Arlington, their current park.
