Philadelphia Eagles must keep the faith in Carson Wentz next season

Holding the home team to an incredibly high standard is almost a right of passage for any Philadelphia based fan. No matter what is going wrong or the players on the roster, teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, 76ers, Phillies, Union, and Flyers are all held to playoff-or-bust standards. Unfortunately, this has created a quick fire attitude from these very fans in the past.

Despite the fact that the Eagles season ended a couple of weeks ago, I keep hearing rumblings from fans of the team. Some of the more vocal members — yes, I said more vocal, hard to believe right? — of the team’s fan base have begun to berate and put down quarterback Carson Wentz. Coming off a rookie season where he was successful given the pieces he had, these calls bother me a bit.

In a world of Super Bowl-or-bust, Eagles’ fans need to come back down to earth real quick. Carson Wentz is not Tom Brady at the moment. Entering his second year in the league next season, Wentz still needs time to adapt to the NFL. Playing for FCS North Dakota State in college, Wentz did not have the opportunity to play against future NFL defensemen week in and week out.

Let us also not forget Philly’s issues at wide receiver and running back. Both position groups suffered from injury issues last season but also were extremely inconsistent even when healthy. With only a strong tight end group to throw too, it is no wonder the offense and Wentz struggled during the latter part of the season.

Even with additions through free agency and the draft, it is unlikely that this offense requires only one offseason to work out the bugs. While I am hopeful that some key players will take immediately and fill some massive holes, reality says that this is unlikely to occur. If it doesn’t, I believe that we can expect Carson Wentz to again have some issues next season.

This is not to say that we won’t see some growth though. Working on his mechanics this offseason, Wentz is a high ceiling player that is still in need of development. Two seasons is nowhere near enough time to get the job done. However, if we are patient, I firmly believe that Wentz can lead this team to postseason success in the future.

Fans of the Philadelphia Eagles need to keep the faith in Wentz. Though we have just really entered 2017, I am already beginning to think just what could be when we get to 2018.
