Opening 25-year-old baseball cards with Pirates manager Clint Hurdle

When Pittsburgh Pirates skipper Clint Hurdle guested on this week’s episode of 25-Year-Old Baseball Cards, it was practically a walk through the last few years of Hall of Fame inductions. Between the two of us, we pulled some of the top players who have recently earned their Cooperstown plaques.

As you can imagine, that made the trading portion of this episode a lot of fun. But that’s not the only thing that made his episode a hoot. Hurdle got stories too!

Hurdle is 59 and he’s been around the game longer than I’ve been alive. His rookie season as a player was 1977 and after playing 10 years, he coached and manager for the Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers and Pirates. What I’m saying is: He knows a lot of players.

Because of that, we got some fun tidbits from Hurdle — like the time he tried to give the Rockies hitters a big pep talk only to realize he forgot about one important thing. Or the price he paid for homering off Rick Sutcliffe.
