North Dakota reporter, covering Carson Wentz, gets offered pot in Philly
Carson Wentz is going to be quite a story in Philadelphia. The good folks at The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, the newspaper that watched Wentz rise to fame at North Dakota State, felt so strongly about this that it sent a reporter to cover Wentz’s debut with the Eagles on Sunday.
The debut went very well as the Eagles won, 29-10, with Wentz looking like an old pro. But reporter Mike McFeely’s story went even better.
McFeely seemed to get the full Philly experience in his trip. He went to sports bars. He talked to the locals about their shiny, new rookie QB. And McFeely was offered weed after a Temple game.
“You came all the way from North Dakota?” said Eagles fan, Joe, who claimed to not have a last name. Which is just about perfect.
This pushed it over the top: “Cool,” Joe said. “But when you ask a couple guys drinking beer and smoking weed if they’re Eagles fans in Philadelphia, what do you expect?
“You wanna hit?”
McFeely said he passed on the offer, in case you were wondering.
And Eagles fans passed on the chance to trash the kid prior to his first game, showing actual enthusiasm for his chances to succeed — in fact, they’re quite (cough) high on him. This was written before the game, too, so if his debut is any indication they might be right to be bullish. They also might be right to get stoned and — as McFeely’s feature shows — drop a few f-bombs when the kid does well. Hey, why the (expletive) not?
The other funny reveal in the entertaining story: Eagles fans apparently wanted nothing to do with Sam Bradford. Trading now appears to be a masterstroke in the eyes of a bartender from a sports bar who apparently has neither a first nor a last name.
“Nobody thought he could do [expletive],” the nameless bartender said of Bradford.
This all will work out pretty well. And for what it’s worth, we’re glad that The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead sent McFeely to Wentz’s new city. If for no other reason than to point out how wild this whole deal must be for the kid who hunts geese and now has something completely different going on.
Maybe the Eagles drafting a kid from Fargo wasn’t so half-baked after all.
