Julien Gauthier, 19, scores goal of year candidate vs. Russia (Video)

For the first time in seven years, the Canadian Hockey League has captured back-to-back CIBC Canada Russia Series titles thanks to Team QMJHL’s 4-0 win over Russia in Chicoutimi on Tuesday night. It was the fifth game of their series, and the CHL holds an insurmountable lead heading into the sixth and final game on Thursday.

It was a big night for Carolina Hurricanes prospects, as goalie Callum Booth of the Quebec Remparts stopped 16 shots for the shutout and 19-year-old Julien Gauthier of the Val-d’Or Foreurs scored two goals.

His second goal was … well, it was something spectacular. Here’s Gauthier using his strength to ward off a defender and then scoring with a Forsberg move.

That was just a disgusting dangle at the end, and Gauthier saw it all the way through.

Here it is in GIF form:

Nice effort by the keeper to pull ye olde Jonathan Quick Move (i.e. kicking out the post with your skate on a save). But alas, a goal.

Gauthier was drafted No. 21 overall last summer by the Canes, with a pick that was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in the Andrej Sekera trade back in 2015. It was a conditional pick – the reason Gauthier belongs to Carolina is because the Kings missed the 2015 playoffs. That was the condition.

Remember that if this kid becomes a star.
