Jeter resumes baseball activities

Derek Jeter took a step forward in his recovery Monday.

The New York Yankees shortstop swung a bat for the first time since spring training, when he re-injured his surgically repaired left ankle. He also fielded grounders hit right at him at the team's training facility in Tampa, Fla., according to multiple media reports.

He has yet to resume running.

Jeter, who turns 39 in two weeks, isn't expected to rejoin the Yankees until after the All-Star break. However, there is no set timetable for his return.

Jeter broke the ankle last fall in the opening game of the American League Championship series, and he subsequently had surgery. He targeted a return in time for Opening Day, but after participating in spring training through mid-March, he suffered a setback and was shut down.

Eventually, a new, small crack in the ankle was discovered, and the Yankees announced Jeter would miss at least half of the season.

Jeter played catch at Yankee Stadium late last month, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi said recently that Alex Rodriguez is closer to a return than Jeter is. Rodriguez is recovering from hip surgery, and he also is expected to miss at least half of the season.
