Glenn wins Bills' LT job; Young closes in on No. 2 QB
Rookie Cordy Glenn has won the Bills' starting left tackle job. The second-round pick has received the bulks of the snaps over Erik Pears with Chris Hairston moved to right tackle.
Glenn played guard and tackle at Georgia, starting 50 games of the 53 in which he played. Some scouts viewed him as a better prospect inside, but Buffalo drafted him with the intention of playing him at left tackle and competing for Demetress Bell's former spot.
"Ability is not the issue, it is just playing time," Gailey said of Glenn. "He needs as much playing time as he can get. I think if he gets playing time he has a chance to be a really good football player. He has not done great against the two good pass rushers he has faced, but he has done OK. I think we see a great upside with him."
At 6-feet-6, 345 pounds, scouts were stunned by Glenn's light feet and athletic ability. He doesn't always play to his elite skill level, but the Bills view him as a potentially elite blocker in the NFL based on his combination of height, bulk, long arms and footwork.
The decision to announce Glenn as the starter now gives him more time to build chemistry and communication with left guard Andy Levitre.
"I think I have made strides. I have gotten better with each preseason game," Glenn said. "I am still not where I need to be. I am just going to keep working and keep getting better. Keep buying into everything that coach tells me. Just trying to help out this team."
Gailey also announced Vince Young will get the majority of the snaps with the second-team offense in Buffalo's third preseason game.
"We need to see how he can handle more game plan, more playing time and more of everything," Gailey said. "It is not an indictment on Tyler (Thigpen), it is just Vince has done some good things. We know where Tyler is and we have to evaluate Vince more."
Gailey acknowledged Young has pulled ahead of Thigpen.
"He has made more things happen. You have to give him credit for that," Gailey said of Young. "We have to see how much he can handle. Have to see if he can handle the whole load because once you get to the season, he will not get many reps. We have to find out how he can handle all of this."
