3 former Penn State administrators sentenced to jail time
Former Penn State president Graham Spanier was sentenced Friday to two months in jail on child endangerment charges.
Spanier was found guilty of misdemeanor child endangerment in March. He was sentenced along with former Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz for their roles in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal at the university. After their jail time is complete they will serve their remaining penalties under house arrest.
Curley will serve a three-month jail sentence while Schultz will also serve two months. Both men were also found guilty of child endangerment. None of the three men reported to police an accusation by a former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary that Sandusky was abusing a boy in a bathroom in Penn State’s football facility in 2001.
According to the AP, Curley and Schultz apologized before their sentencing Friday.
”I am very remorseful I did not comprehend the severity of the situation. I sincerely apologize to the victims and to all who were impacted because of my mistake,” Curley said. ”I sincerely apologize for not having done more.”
Schultz said, ”It really sickens me to think I might have played a part in children being hurt. I’m sorry that I didn’t do more, and I apologize to the victims.’
A prosecutor for the state called Spanier a “complete and utter failure as a leader” at the sentencing. She also said Spanier tried to “protect his reputation and the reputation of his friends and the reputation of the University above the well-being of some innocent children.”
Sandusky was arrested in 2011 and is serving a maximum 60-year sentence on charges that he sexually assaulted 10 young men.
