Bellator 84 Results: Alexander Volkov Captures Heavyweight Crown, Lightweights Cancelled

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Bellator, having to cancel another bout at the last minute on Friday night, but they were finally successful in crowning a heavyweight champion.

Alexander Volkov captured the belt vacated by the retired champion Cole Konrad.

Volkov had to use all five rounds, but he did just that, taking a unanimous decision victory over Rich Hale at Bellator 84 in Hammond, Ind.

The lightweight tournament final between Dave Jansen and Marcin Held was nixed at the last minute. Although both fighters weighed in Thursday and the fight was ostensibly a go, Indiana commission officials realized that Held was only 20 years of age and determined that he was not allowed to fight in a casino.

The fight will now take place on a future card in 2013.

Last week’s featherweight tournament final between Shahbulat Shamhalaev and Rad Martinez was also shuffled to a future card, which will take place with new television partner Spike TV. Shamhalaev was stricken with food poisoning on the day of the fight last week, causing the bout’s cancellation.
