How will Alshon Jeffery perform on a one year deal with the Eagles?

In this past off season, the Philadelphia Eagles brought in wide receiver Alshon Jeffery from the Chicago Bears on a one-year deal worth $14 million. It was a good signing because Jeffery brings value, but for only one year? On top of that, $14 million? This definitely puts the Eagles at a high risk/high reward with Jeffery. At 27 years old, he can still make plays and he should be a great weapon for Carson Wentz, but again for $14 million for a year? It’s hard to say if this was a good contract to give him or not.

The Eagles needed help at wide receiver to help out Wentz and Jeffery was the best option in free agency. They also added weapons Torrey Smith and brought in two receivers through the draft in Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson to provide more receivers as compared to last year. Jeffery does bring a lot to the table and can be a big play maker, but the contract that he got may come back to haunt the Eagles.

Jeffery brings 304 catches, 4,549 yards and 26 touchdowns to Philly. When he isn’t battling injuries, he can get open and he can be a factor in an offenses’ success. Can he live up the potential that he shows? Yes, but he could also make the Eagles regret giving him a lot of money in one year.

Pros of Jeffery

Obviously he was the best target that the Eagles could have got. He is still young enough to make plays. At 6’3″ and 218 pounds, he provides size which gives him an advantage over small cornerbacks. Now that he has a franchise quarterback in Wentz, he will be able play at a consistent level if he stays healthy and open.

Jeffery plays like he is the best receiver in the league at different points. That was when he had Jay Cutler as his quarterback who failed in Chicago. Now that he has a young quarterback in Carson Wentz, he will be able to make more plays because Wentz will have a true #1 receiver that he will always be looking to. Jeffery was the main weapon in Chicago, but it was interception after interception when Cutler was throwing the ball.

Cons of Jeffery

Alshon Jeffery is injury-prone. While he plays through them most of the time, he still can’t play his best game because the injury holds him back. He has only played a full season twice in his career and each time he reaches over 1,000 yards receiving. The most touchdowns he has ever scored in a season is ten, with the next closest number being seven. Ten or more touchdowns for a receiver is great, but he’s only accomplished it once.

When he doesn’t have an injury he is dangerous. When he does, it makes cornerbacks lives easy on game day. If Jeffery can live up to the contact he was given, then the Eagles made a great investment. This was a good signing for Philly, but we will see whether or not they spent $14 million on a player that was well worth it or someone who didn’t live up to the hype.
