Who are Newport's top taxpayers? Take a look at the top 50.
Hotels generate plenty of discussion in the City-by-the-Sea, but there's no doubt of the significance their tax payments have on the city's coffers.
Like any municipality, Newport property taxes to fund the majority of its public services. In fact, the city's 2022-23 adopted budget predicts the city will collect $82.87 million in residential and commercial property tax in 2023 alone, which is about 80% of all general fund revenue for the city.
Below is a list of the top 50 entities that paid the most in property taxes to the city in Fiscal Year 2022.

This Portsmouth boy was bullied for his long hair. What he's done to rise above the hate.
At just 9 years old, A.J. Silvia knew he wanted to help people. A fifth-grader at the time enrolled at Portsmouth Middle School, A.J. learned of an Ohio-based organization called Wigs For Kids that assists children suffering from cancer, alopecia, burns or other forms of hair loss.
He wanted to get involved, so he let his dark, brown hair grow, first past his shoulders and then down his back with the goal of donating it. Because adolescents can be cruel, A.J. faced some teasing from classmates.
In spite of the constant barrage of disparaging comments over the length of his hair, A.J.’s spirit never wavered, and he made the needed 12-inch donation. Then he started growing it out again. He’s now a 12-year-old eighth-grader — quite a bit younger than many of his classmates because he skipped kindergarten — and is dealing with the same type of a bullying.
Once again, in the face of scrutiny, he plans to donate his hair to help others.

Easton's Beach could be in line for a significant upgrade. Take a look at the plan.
The snack bar and carousel buildings at Easton's Beach in Newport are falling down and ultimately will be demolished, but a plan is in the works to give the city-owned facility a significant upgrade.
That plan was presented to the City Council during a workshop Wednesday night, and reporter Savana Dunning was there. Read her story and check out the renderings.

How the Middletown Planning Board voted on former Benny's, mini-golf, Starbucks proposals
There's a lot happening in Middletown right now. From the potential construction of new schools (to be decided by voters on Nov. 8), to planned commercial development and affordable housing projects, there's no shortage of things on the table.
The town's Planning Board last week made decisions regarding three of those proposals — the former Benny's property, a proposed mini golf course and a new drive-through Starbucks location. A school ranking website recently unveiled its 2022-2023 public K-12 rankings, including all of the schools in Rhode Island. Reporter Savana Dunning pulled out the grades for Newport County high schools, middle schools and elementary schools.
