Newcastle cruise past 10-man Fulham following unusual red card

Hometown teenager Lewis Miley and veteran Dan Burn both scored goals as Newcastle beat 10-man Fulham 3-0 at St James' Park on Saturday.

Raul Jimenez was sent off for a wild airborne challenge in the first half that was dangerous without apparent malice, as the Mexico international went rear-end first into Sean Longstaff's midsection.

The Magpies did not complain, with the 17-year-old Miley opening the scoring before Miguel Almiron and Burn found the scoresheet. Bruno Guimaraes set up two goals and Martin Dubravka kept the clean sheet days after Newcastle exited the UEFA Champions League and European competition altogether.

Marco Silva's Fulham, however, will be dour at the red card and the loss after after back-to-back 5-0 wins in the Premier League.

Lewis Miley the real deal to show academy growth

Newcastle's latest breakthrough is Lewis Miley, and the 17-year-old looks capable of being everything the Magpies would like to tout from their academy: A local boy who can reach the very highest of levels.

The Magpies' academy has produced so many great players over the years, from Peter Beardsley and Lee Clark to Andy Carroll, but the true elite talents had slowed to a trickle as the club failed to get bright lights like Adam Armstrong and Matty Longstaff to the next level.

Recent years, however, have seen Sean Longstaff become a regular, while Elliot Anderson has slowly turned into a true factor.

Miley, however, could be the best of the bunch by a mile. A young 17 — his birthday's in May — Miley plays aggressive, passionate football and seeks the ball in the final third, usually looking to set up the forwards.

Keep an eye on the young midfield menace, whose 19-year-old brother Jamie is also drawing positive reviews.

What’s next?

The congestion isn't over for Newcastle, who goes to Chelsea on Tuesday for a League Cup quarterfinal. The Magpies then head to Luton Town on Saturday, Dec. 23.

Fulham's also in the League Cup quarters, off to Everton on Tuesday. Their next PL fixture is Saturday versus Burnley.

You can't say there weren't talking points.

Jimenez was sent off for a moment you don't see every day, Newcastle has not been able to take advantage of the absence, and the injury-hit Magpies saw two more regulars — Fabian Schar and Joelinton — sub off with injuries.

The Magpies have 72% possession, are out-attempting Fulham 8-4, and lead in xG by 0.74-0.18. Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka has three saves and Fulham counterpart Bernd Leno's at two.

After back-to-back away defeats in the Premier League (they've won just once in the road in eight attempts this season), Eddie Howe will be relieved to be playing at St James' Park as the home fans can drag their injury-hit side through. They lost another couple of key players against Milan as their freak run of injuries continues.

Fulham have switched things up defensively in recent weeks with Tim Ream missing out through injury and Tosin coming back in with Diop still out injured. The likes of Willian, Alex Iwobi and Andreas Pereira have been superb in supporting Jimenez up top and Silva will be hoping his side can remain solid at the back and keep creating the number of chances they have been in recent weeks. The balance now looks a lot better for this Fulham side.
