Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

17:09

The full-time whistle goes, as Newcastle return to winning ways with a resounding 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace! With the majority of the damage done via three first-half goals, the second period played out in much the same fashion, with the Magpies dominating the ball and most of the chances. Several Palace blocks denied them early on, but Eddie Howe's side struck their fourth on 66 minutes as Callum Wilson finished off a rapid-fire counter-attack. Almiron spurned a late opportunity to score a fifth for the Magpies, and while Palace produced half-chances through Guehi, Rak-Sakyi and Edoaurd, Pope was only tested by the latter's free-kick. Newcastle take all three points and climb to fifth in the table with the daunting task of facing Arsenal next up, while the Eagles remain 10th having now won, drawn and lost three each of their nine matches.

FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 4-0 CRYSTAL PALACE.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

17:01

There's a break in play following an injury to Palace forward Edouard, who is down in Newcastle's box receiving treatment. He's eventually back on his feet though, and we're cleared to continue.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

17:00

We're into four additional minutes at the end of the second half, which Newcastle players and fans alike will certainly enjoy as they close in on three vital points.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:59

BLOCKED!! Palace make a late charge on the counter and Franca releases Rak-Sakyi. He skips past Schar before shooting from a tight angle, but the Magpies defender slides in to make a timely block!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:57

We're almost at the 90, with Newcastle closing in on a comfortable victory. That shaky opening few weeks which featured three straight losses now looks light years away, and with four wins in five about to be sealed, it's a good time for those in black and white.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:56

Rak-Sakyi and Ward combine down the right as the latter fires a cross towards the back post, and despite being under no pressure whatsoever, Livramento's poor first touch gifts Palace a corner!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:55

SAVED!!! The Eagles win a free-kick 25 yards out, and Edouard fancies his chances. The shot appears destined for the top corner, but Pope stretches and sticks out a big right hand to tip the ball past the post!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:54

Palace are hardly laying a glove on Newcastle at the moment, and are largely chasing shadows at 4-0 down. Their inconsistent form this season looks set to continue, with the scoreline and manner of defeat surely a worry despite it only being their third of the campaign.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:52

Substitution Jefferson Andrés Lerma Solís David Ikechukwu Ozoh

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:52

Despite Palace comitting 11 fouls in this game so far, higher than their season average, they've not prevented Newcastle from recording more shots (seven) and crosses (15) than they average per game in the Premier League.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:48

Franca turns and drives into open space before shooting from 30 yards, but the Palace substitute's effort is always rising as it sails beyond the uprights!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:47

SAVED!!! Newcastle burst clear at the other end again, as Almiron is put through on goal. Mitchell gets across to force him wide, and the eventual shot from the Paraguayan is straight at Johnstone, who makes the save!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:45

WIDE!!! Palace win a corner, which is flicked on at the front post by Ayew. Doucoure's follow-up from the edge of the box is blocked and drops to Guehi, who can only fire wide from close range! That passage of play sums up the Eagles' performance today - they're just not at the races.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:45

Substitution Joelinton Cássio Apolinário de Lira Elliot Anderson

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:43

Palace have made just 18 substitutions in the Premier League this season, eight fewer than any other side, while never using more than three in a single game. The last teams to make fewer substitutions at this stage of a Premier League campaign were Burnley (14) and Aston Villa (15) in 2020-21.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:39

Two of Murphy's three assists this season have now come in this game, and having not made the fast start to the second half that they did the first, Newcastle tighten their grip further and Palace are reeling.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:34

After winning three of their last five Premier League meetings with Newcastle between February 2019 and April 2021, Crystal Palace are winless in four against the Magpies, failing to score in each of the last three. Barring an unbelievable comeback here, that poor record looks set to extend today.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:34

Substitution Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura Sandro Tonali

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:34

Substitution Kieran John Trippier Valentino Francisco Livramento

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:32

Pope has to race out his box to clear a ball put in behind his defence, and it falls straight to Lerma. He attempts a half-volley from miles out, but it's off target and easy for the Newcastle goalkeeper to collect.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:31

Assist Jacob Kai Murphy

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:27

CHANCE!! The corner is easily dealt with and the Magpies take flight with a speedy counter-attack. Murphy is put into open pasture and crosses for Gordon, but Ward slides into the box and puts the ball over the top to prevent a fourth Newcastle goal!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:26

BLOCKED!!! Palace's full-backs combine as Ward's floating cross-field pass is cut back across the face of goal by Mitchell at full stretch. Edouard is the recipient and shoots first-time, but Lascelles gets in the way to block and concede a corner.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:25

Substitution Jean-Philippe Mateta Jesurun Rak-Sakyi

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:25

Successive crosses from Trippier are blocked away by Palace defenders, with the second taking a nick off Hughes to go behind for a corner!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:24

Yellow Card Tyrick Kwon Mitchell

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:24

The Palace corner is headed down to Ward on the edge of the box, but he can only send a half-volley looping over the top and into the stands!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:22

Hughes wins possession in midfield and passes to Edouard in open space. The ball sits up nicely for him to strike, but Schar is there in cover to make the block for Newcastle!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:21

Guimaraes brings the ball forward and is clattered before releasing Murphy down the right. He finds Gordon again, but neither he, Wilson nor Longstaff can get a shot away before it's cleared, despite having plenty of time to do so!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:19

Hughes turns and runs into open space, leaving several defenders behind him as he approaches the box, but he's tackled and dispossessed before he can pull the trigger!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:17

Ward looks to beat Burn around the outside as he chases Andersen's pass forward, but the Newcastle defender shepherds the ball brilliantly as it rolls behind for a goal-kick.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:15

Gordon drifts in-field to release Wilson down the left, but the striker's cross into the middle is headed clear by Andersen.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:11

Hughes resumes proceedings on Tyneside, kicking off the second half for Palace.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:09

Palace have now been kept scoreless in eight of the nine first halves they'ved played this season, and unless they can find a goal early in the second here at St. James' Park, Newcastle will ride out a comfortable victory to and condemn the Eagles to a third defeat of the season.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

16:01

The first half ends with the hosts in total control, as Newcastle score three at the very start and end of the half to take a commanding lead into the second period. Murphy's amibitous chip into the far corner was initially denied, but VAR intervened to rule out the offside decision and put the Magpies 1-0 up after just four minutes. The game then hit a bit of a lull period as the two sides battled for consistent possession, but the steady pressure built by Newcastle would pay dividends by the end of the half. A sumptuous Murphy cross was diverted into the net by Gordon, and Longstaff also popped up in inury time to capitalise on a Palace mistake for 3-0. The visitors have shown very little at the other end, and their late collapse means it's a long, long way back for Palace in the next 45 minutes.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:58

HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 3-0 CRYSTAL PALACE.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:56

Newcastle have now scored 10 first-half goals in nine Premier League games this season, the most of any team in the division, with their four between minutes 30 and 45 also a league record so far!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:53

Yellow Card Odsonne Édouard

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:53

We'll play five more first-half minutes at St. James' Park, and having just scored their second, Newcastle will have their tails up in the hunt for another!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:53

Yellow Card Kieran John Trippier

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:49

CHANCE!!! Schar drives forward from the centre-back and scoops the ball over the top for Longstaff. He charges after it into the box, but can't quite time an attempt at a shot and the ball rolls behind!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:49

Goal Sean David Longstaff

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:49

Prior to this game, Trippier had created 89 chances from set plays in the Premier League since the start of last season, 28 more than any other player in Europe’s big-five leagues. Eight of those chances have resulted in assists, the joint-most of any player from those aforementioned leagues, and he's already added to another to his tally in this first half.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:47

Assist Jacob Kai Murphy

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:46

Goal Anthony Michael Gordon

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:45

The latest corner, from the left-hand side, is played short by Trippier, who then runs onto the ball and fires an in-swinging cross which beats everyone as it curls around the far post!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:44

A corner swung in by Trippier is nodded down at the far post by Lascelles, but Guimaraes following in can't get enough contact on the ball to steer it goalwards!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:43

The Magpies currently sit eighth in the Premier League table on 13 points, but based on Opta’s expected points model, their expected points total based on game-by-game expected goals is 16.4; this is the second-highest expected points total in the competition this season after Manchester City's 16.6.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:42

Yellow Card Sean David Longstaff

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:41

WIDE!! The play is switched from left to right and Murphy tees up Trippier to cross from the byline. He does so, but Wilson arriving at the back post can't direct his header on target and nods wide under pressure!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:39

Newcastle have conceded 17 Premier League goals at home since the start of last season, the joint-fewest of any non-promoted team alongside Manchester United. The Magpies have also kept a clean sheet in each of their last two at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:38

OFF THE BAR!!! What a chance to double the lead! Murphy takes on Lerma and skips past the midfielder to float a cross over Johnstone and towards the back post. Gordon is there with the goal begging, but the winger can't make Palace pay as he side-foots a volley off the crossbar and back out again!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:35

Longstaff finds space in the box once again and drills a low pass across the face of goal. Wilson is the target and waiting to tap in at the far post, but Ward steps across him to scythe the ball away!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:33

SAVED!!! Longstaff takes a quick free-kick and find Murphy in space, but his fizzing shot from the edge of the area is tipped wide by Johnstone!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:32

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:31

Yellow Card Jean-Philippe Mateta

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:30

Newcastle have maintained a healthy 68.4% percent possession in the opening stages of the game, but aside from Murphy's early opener have created very little with it in the final third!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:27

OVER!!! Hughes' corner is headed half-clear by the Magpies, and falls kindly for Mitchell who lashes a first-time volley up and over the top!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:26

Edouard takes on Murphy down the left side and dribbles to the byline. He looks to cut a cross back into the middle, but the ball deflects behind off the Newcastle goalscorer and it's a Palace corner.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:23

Murphy's teasing cross into the six-yard box is dealt with - partially - by Andersen, who flicks the ball up and into the air before nodding it behind to safety.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:20

Trippier drifts into midfield and fires a forward ball into Wilson's feet on the edge of the box, but he can't get a shot away before being swarmed by Palace defenders and it's cleared by Andersen!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:17

The last four Premier League meetings between Newcastle and Crystal Palace have seen just three goals, with both encounters last season finishing 0-0, but we've seen plenty of goalmouth action already in this one and the opener scored after just four minutes!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:16

A collision on the touchline between Trippier and Mitchell leaves both full-backs on the deck requiring treatment, but it's not long before the two England defenders are back on their feet.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:15

WIDE!!! Hughes' corner is swung into the area and met by Mateta at the far post, whose free header is a fraction off-target as it whistles past the far post!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:14

Palace look to respond straight from kick-off as Mateta cuts and dangerous ball back across the face, but Murphy slides in from nowhere to put the ball behind for a corner!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:13

Newc astle have now notched eight first-half goals in the Premier League this season, second only to Liverpool, while only champions Manchester City (with four) have managed more in the first 15 minutes of games than the Magpies' three!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:09

Hang on, we might not have heard the last of this! Trippier is the player flagged, and on second viewing, he looks to be level with the last defender as that initial ball is fired towards him!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:09

Assist Kieran John Trippier

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:08

Goal Jacob Kai Murphy

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:08

BALL IN THE NET!! A cross-field pass to Trippier is scooped into Murphy's path by the right-back. Murphy scoops an audacious attempt towards goal, which deceives Johnstone and sails into the far corner! He wheels away in celebration, but the offside flag is up to deny him!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:05

Trippier slips a pass forward for Murphy racing in behind the defence, but Guehi intervenes to put the ball behind for the first corner of the game.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:04

It'll be the hosts who get us underway, as Longstaff kicks the game off for Newcastle!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

15:01

The teams are lined up in the tunnel, and head out onto the pitch ahead of kick-off at a packed St. James' Park!

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

14:50

Palace make three alterations of their own, as Clyne and Riedewald shift to the bench with Jeffrey Schlupp absent from the team altogether. In their place come captain Joel Ward and midfielders Jefferson Lerma and Cheick Doucoure, who will each be out to stem the flow of the Magpies’ attacks.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

14:46

Newcastle have made four changes following their 2-2 draw in the capital, all of which come in attacking positions. An all-new frontline of Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy will look to cause Palace plenty of problems, and Joelinton joins the midfield three. Top scorer Alexander Isak is on the bench alongside Sandro Tonali, who keeps his place in the squad despite the potential of a betting-related ban in the coming weeks.
