NewCanaan's2023 Grip It and Rip It football tournament kicks off with 33 teams

Jul. 6—In all, 25 Connecticut schools will be represented, joined by seven out-of-state teams. Host New Canaan is fielding two teams.

The two-day tournament will begin with pool play on July 7, with an afternoon session starting at 1 p.m., and an evening session starting at 4:30 p.m.

Competition will be held at New Canaan High School's Dunning Field and the Water Tower Turf field next to the tennis courts.

The results of pool play will be used to seed a double elimination tournament on July 8. Teams are guaranteed a minimum of six games during the two days.

Twelve of the FCIAC's 16 schools will be included, along with three each from the SCC and SWC. Also in the field are two teams from the Pequot and NEPSAC and one each from the CCC, ECC and NVL.

This year's field includes 10 CIAC tournament qualifiers from last fall, including state champions Greenwich (Class LL) and New Canaan (Class L) and runner-up Fairfield Prep (Class LL).

The 2023 Spring Sports Championships will be held between Thursday, June 8-Monday, June 12, 2023.
