Liberty lose Betnijah Laney for 8 weeks after knee surgery
The New York Liberty will be without Betnijah Laney for at least two months.
The Liberty announced that their guard/forward underwent arthroscopic partial meniscectomy on her right knee on Wednesday. She’s expected to be sidelined for eight weeks.

Laney, who was the league’s Most Improved Player in 2020 when she was with the Atlanta Dream, averaged a team-high 16.8 points and 5.2 assists per game last season in New York. She’s averaged 13.3 points and 4.3 assists so far this season, though Laney has played in just four games and hasn’t seen the court since May 17 while dealing with the lingering knee injury. She missed their season opener, too.
Laney’s injury is just the latest setback for the Liberty, who are off to a brutal start to the season. The team has started the year just 1-7 under first-year head coach Sandy Brondello, and hasn’t won a game since their two-point win in their season opener. The Liberty are also without DiDi Richards, who is dealing with a hamstring injury, and Jocelyn Willoughby, who has a knee injury.
If Laney can return in eight weeks, she will have about seven regular season games left.
