New Orleans Mardi Gras parade float 'Willful Blindness' will mock NFC championship non-call

In case you were wondering, no, the city of New Orleans and its residents have not forgiven or forgotten the NFL and the officiating crew of the NFC championship game and the egregious non-call that played a role in the Saints’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

‘Willful Blindness’

Via Jeff Duncan of Nola.com, this year’s Krewe d’Etat parade will feature a float called “Willful Blindness” that will mock Bill Vinovich’s crew and league commissioner Roger Goodell.

Under Vinovich, who’s wearing an “I (heart) LA” hat, sunglasses and a walking cane typically used by blind individuals is a sign that reads:

“NFL referees qualifications:

  • Do what Roger says

  • Poor eyesight

  • Poor judgment”

On the other end of the float is Goodell, also in sunglasses, saying, “I need the Rams to win!”

‘This fell in our lap’

Le Krewe d’Etat is one of the social organizations that puts on parades or balls during New Orleans’ Carnival season, which is tied to Mardi Gras. This particular group is known for lampooning current events and offering political commentary on its floats.

“We always try to save a couple floats for last minute to be more topical and current,” Krewe d’Etat captain and spokesman Tommy Mitchell said. “This year we had actually decided the last float, but it had not been finalized, and they were not painting it yet. Then this [the NOLA No-Call] fell in our lap. So we called an audible, and came up with the float to cover the topic.

"It was like it was meant to be. The game wasn't over an hour, and guys on the committee were already emailing and texting about a float.”

As the float rolls down the parade route on Friday night, krewe members will throw yellow hankie flags.
