Nevada volleyball hosts tournament, boys XC picks up win, football takes down Perry

The Nevada volleyball team hosted the Nevada Invitational on Sept. 23, finishing with solid results.

The Cubs won the first four games of the tournament, however fell short in the end to lose their final game.

Nevada opened the tournament strong, defeating Des Moines Lincoln in two sets with a 21-14 set one victory and 21-5 set two win.

The Cubs then downed Bondurant-Farrar in two sets in the next match, winning set one 21-18 before taking set two 21-17.

Nevada continued its win streak with a defeat of Van Meter in its next match, taking set one 21-11 and set two 21-9.

The Cubs’ final win of the tournament came against Norwalk, who they took down in two sets as well, winning both by a score of 21-19.

Nevada then fell to Clear Creek Amana in the final match of the day, falling in three sets. The Cubs took the first set 21-17, but the Clippers bounced back to win sets two and three by scores of 21-11 and 15-11, respectively.

The Cubs will look to bounce back when they compete in the Waverly-Shell Rock Tournament at 9 a.m. Sept. 30 at Waverly-Shell Rock High School.

Boys cross country grabs win

The Nevada boys cross country team competed in the Norsemen Invitational on Sept. 21, finishing with successful results.

The Cubs placed first overall at the meet among 11 teams, finishing with 51 total team points.

Senior Carter Holland and junior Brian Rohde led Nevada in the win, placing fourth and fifth overall at the meet. Holland ran a time of 16:50.96 while Rohde finished with a time of 17:21.97.

Sophomore Dawson Lemke also finished in the top 10, placing ninth with a time of 17:52.98.

Also finishing well for Nevada was senior Gavin Skaggs, who ran a time of 18:12.88 to place 14th overall at the meet.

Football takes down Perry

The Nevada football team picked up another win when it competed against Perry on Sept. 22.

The Cubs defeated the Bluejays 49-14 following a solid third quarter in which they scored 21 points.

Senior running back Cason Stevenson had a big day in the win, rushing 14 times for 184 yards to lead Nevada with four touchdowns.

Sophomore running back Austin Waldera also had a good day, rushing eight times for 64 yards and a score.

Junior quarterback Connor King had a big day as well, going 9-for-12 for 201 yards and a touchdown, with senior Jacob Khounsourath being on the receiving end of the score, catching three passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Junior Jackson Burlage led the defense with 6.5 total tackles, while senior Kyle Klingsbury was key on special teams. Klingsbury returned one punt return 95 yards for a score and also scored a two-point conversion.

The Cubs will look to add to their win total when they meet Knoxville at homecoming at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at Nevada High School.
