Nets waive guard Edmond Sumner

Brooklyn Nets guard Edmond Sumner (4) drives to the basket against New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (11) during the third quarter at Barclays Center.

The Nets announced Saturday they have waived reserve guard Edmond Sumner.

The move comes after Brooklyn agreed to terms on a one-year deal with power forward Darius Bazley on Friday night.

Sumner, 27, signed a two-year, $4.2 million deal last summer, but the final year of that contract was not guaranteed. After missing the entire 2021-22 season due to an injury, the guard appeared in 53 games (12 starts) for the Nets. He averaged 7.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists on 46.1 percent shooting in 13.9 minutes per game.

A second-round pick out of Xavier in 2017 by the Indiana Pacers, Sumner first came to Brooklyn in a trade while he was injured, he was released soon after, before signing that offseason

In a tweet, he thanked the organization for taking a chance on him.

Releasing Sumner will create an additional $2.24 million in space below the luxury tax line. The Nets now have in the neighborhood of $12 million before they hit they would incur repeater luxury tax penalties which would make any money spent above the $165 million tax threshold considerably more expensive.

With the two moves, Brooklyn's roster remains at 14 with one slot still open for an additional acquisition.
