NBA media rights deal could be a key to Cleveland Cavaliers local broadcasts

Tucked away in an analysis of the NBA’s media rights situation is a little tidbit that Cleveland Cavaliers and NBA fans in general may want to pay attention.

For the record, the league’s media rights are up for grabs after the 2024-25 season and there are expected to be multiple suitors both in the traditional realm (think television) and non-traditional (Amazon Prime, Apple).

But in the piece by Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, this little nugget stands out:

"The NBA will broach the idea of partnering with ESPN, Amazon, Apple, Google/YouTube TV — maybe more than one of them — to potentially offer local games direct to consumers."

Right now, local rights for many NBA teams, including the Cavs, are non-existent. Sure, Diamond Sports Group (Bally Sports) could emerge from bankruptcy protection in June, but the future of the NBA, MLB and NHL on the regional sports networks is suspect.
