NBA free agency 2023: Live updates as Damian Lillard requests trade from Portland

NBA free agency 2023 is already off to a hot start after the 6 p.m. opening came Friday. Teams can now negotiate deals with free agents during the moratorium and agree to deals. Those players cannot officially sign until 12:01 p.m. on Thursday. Trades can also become official at that time.

The NBA's 2023-24 salary cap sits at $136 million (up from $123.6 million last year for a 10% increase) with the luxury tax line at $165.3 million (up from $150.3 million.)

It's a decent free agent class, with all the top names on the market having already agreed to new deals in the first 24 hours: Kyrie Irving (re-signing with Dallas), Khris Middleton (re-signing with Milwaukee), Fred VanVleet (signing with Houston), Draymond Green (re-signing with Golden State), Jerami Grant (re-signing with Portland), Bruce Brown (signing with Indiana), Brook Lopez (re-signing with Milwaukee), Cameron Johnson (re-signing with Brooklyn) and Austin Reaves (re-signing with LA Lakers).

But in bigger news, Damian Lillard and James Harden have both requested trades, and will change the landscape of the league upon their new destinations. Lillard's reported preferred new home is Miami. Harden has been a rumored suitor for the LA Clippers.

The Pistons entered free agency with the fifth-most cap space among teams, but used it all up on two trades Friday by acquiring Joe Harris from Brooklyn in a salary dump move and bringing home Flint's Monte Morris in a deal with Washington.
