NBA free agency updates: Big extension for Kings' Domantas Sabonis; Eric Gordon to join Suns

The Houston Rockets had salary cap space and wanted to spend — and they did, agreeing to a max contract with Fred VanVleet. The Phoenix Suns still want to add more high-level talent but don’t have the salary cap space to do that without another major trade. The Los Angeles Lakers had their eyes on Bruce Brown; they didn't get him, but have made a number of interesting moves.

Free agency opened Friday at 6 p.m. ET, with several teams looking to improve their roster in hopes of elevating to playoff contender or championship contender. Some may have to do that via trade, as may be the case for James Harden, who opted into the final season of his Philadelphia contract with the idea the Sixers will trade him.

Who will make the right moves? That will unfold during free agency via signings or trades.

Anthony Edwards receives massive deal from Timberwolves

Guard Anthony Edwards, the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft, agreed to a five-year maximum designated rookie extension worth at least $207 million with the possibility that it reaches $250 million-plus, his agent Bill Duffy of WME Sports said. Edwards is the franchise cornerstone, and last season, he averaged career-highs in points (24.6), rebounds (5.8), assists (4.4), field-goal percentage (45.9%) and 3-point percentage (36.9%). He's the fourth member of the class of 2020 to sign a max extension along with Memphis' Desmond Bane, Indiana's Tyrese Haliburton and Charlotte's LaMelo Ball.

Mason Plumlee returning to Clippers

Veteran center Mason Plumlee reached a one-year, $5 million deal to return to the Los Angeles Clippers, ESPN reported.

Torrey Craig leaves Suns for Bulls

Forward Torrey Craig, a reliable two-way, player came to terms with the Chicago Bulls on a two-year deal with a player option on the second season, ESPN reported.

Day 3 deals

Justin Holiday, Nuggets agree on deal

Veteran guard Justin Holiday signed a one-year deal with the Denver Nuggets, a person with direct knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports. Holiday provides depth for a team that lost Bruce Brown and Jeff Green in free agency.

Lonnie Walker IV goes to Brooklyn

Guard Lonnie Walker IV has agreed to a deal with the Brooklyn Nets, according to ESPN. Walker IV averaged 11 points per game last season with the Lakers and emerged in the rotation late in L.A.’s Western Conference Finals run.

Cody Zeller linking up with Pelicans

Center Cody Zeller agreed to a one-year $3.1 million deal with New Orleans, his agent Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. Zeller provided solid minutes for the Heat last season, including a few big games in limited time in the playoffs.

Miles Bridges stays in Charlotte

Forward Miles Bridges has agreed to a one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer to return to the Charlotte Hornets, his agent Rich Paul said. The NBA suspended Bridges in April for 30 games without pay because of a domestic violence incident that occurred in June 2022. Bridges, who will only miss 10 games because the NBA is giving him credit for 20 games, entered a plea of no contest in November 2022 and missed all of last season. Charlotte and Bridges could not come to terms on an extension, and he will be an unrestricted free agent after next season

Eric Gordon to team up with stars in Phoenix

Guard Eric Gordon has agreed to a deal with the Phoenix Suns, according to The Athletic. Gordon, who the Los Angeles Clippers waived last week after acquiring him in a midseason trade, averaged 12 points last season with the Houston Rockets and Clippers. Gordon began his career with the Clippers when he was taken with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2008 draft. He was named the 2016-17 Sixth Man of the Year while playing for the Rockets. Gordon has averaged 16 points during his 15-year NBA career.

Jordan Clarkson, Jazz to remain partners

Guard Jordan Clarkson, the 2020-21 Sixth Man of the Year, hammered out a three-year, $55 million extension with the Utah Jazz, a person confirmed to USA TODAY Sports under the condition of anonymity. Clarkson averaged 20.8 points, 4.4 assists and 4.0 rebounds and shot 44.4% from the field for the Jazz last season.

Jeff Green going from champs to Rockets

Veteran forward Jeff Green reached a one-year, $6 million deal with Houston, HoopsHype reported. The Denver Nuggets had interest in keeping Green, at the right price.

Domantas Sabonis agrees to extension with Kings

All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis and the Kings have agreed to an extension that will also adjust his pay for the 2023-24 season, ESPN reports. Sabonis, who earned All-NBA honors for the first time in his first full season with the Kings, will be receiving $195 million in new money and $217 million total over five years, per ESPN.

Dante Exum returning to NBA with Mavericks

Dante Exum, the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, has agreed to a guaranteed deal with the Dallas Mavericks, according to ESPN. It marks Exum’s return to the NBA after spending the last two seasons overseas, most recently in Serbia. He’s averaged 5.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists through 245 games in the NBA.

Knicks, Donte DiVincenzo agree to deal

Guard Donte DiVincenzo plans to sign a four-year, $50 million contract with the New York Knicks, a person with direct knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports. DiVincenzo, who averaged 9.4 points and shot 39.7% on 3-pointers with Golden State last season, will reunite with Villanova teammates Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson. DiVincenzo gives the Knicks outside shooting.

Russell Westbrook returning to Clippers

Veteran guard Russell Westbrook, the 2016-17 MVP, will remain with the Los Angeles Clippers on a two-year, $7.8 million contract, a person with knowledge of the deal confirmed to USA TODAY Sports under the condition of anonymity. Westbrook started last season with the Los Angeles Lakers but finished the year with the Clippers where he was a more valuable contributor, averaging 15.8 points, 7.6 assists and 4.9 rebounds and shooting 48.9% from the field and 35.6% on 3-pointers − compared to 41.7% and 29.6% with the Lakers last season.

Jalen McDaniels finds opportunity with Raptors

Forward Jalen McDaniels, whose brother Jaden plays for Minnesota, found common ground with Toronto on a two-year, $9.3 million deal, The Athletic reported. He spent last season with Charlotte and Philadelphia, averaging 9.4 points.

Clippers acquiring Kenyon Martin Jr. in trade with Rockets

Houston traded forward Kenyon Martin Jr. to the Los Angeles Clippers for two second-round picks, a person familiar with the trade confirmed to USA TODAY Sports under the condition of anonymity. Martin, 22, brings youth to the Clippers. He averaged 12.7 points and 5.5 rebounds for the Rockets last season.

Jock Landale getting new deal from Rockets

Jock Landale is headed to Houston. He agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal, with only the first season guaranteed, according to ESPN. Landale averaged 6.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.0 assist off the bench for the Phoenix Suns last season.

Rockets continue spending spree, land Dillon Brooks

Guard-forward Dillon Brooks, who wore out his welcome with the Memphis Grizzlies, came to terms on a four-year, $80 million deal with the Houston Rockets, ESPN reported. Brooks is a strong defender and averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists for Memphis last season, and along with incoming Rockets guard Fred VanVleet, the Rockets are intent on accelerating their rebuild under first-year coach Ime Udoka. Crowder spent 2022-23 with the Bucks in a underutilized role. But with new coach Adrian Griffin taking over for dismissed Mike Budenholzer, Crowder gets a renewed chance at more minutes.

Dwight Powell sticking with Mavericks

Center Dwight Powell, a steady presence in the middle, reached a three-year, $12 million deal to return to the Dallas Mavericks, ESPN reported.

Lakers, Austin Reaves plan to reunite

Austin Reaves is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers with a big payday, The Athletic reported. Reaves, a restricted free agent, agreed to a four-year, $56 million Early Bird maximum contract. In 2021, he signed a two-year, $2.48 million contract with the then-defending champions who continue to reshape and improve their roster. Hornets reward LaMelo Ball with designated max rookie extension

LaMelo Ball, the 2020-21 NBA Rookie of the Year, agreed to a five-year, $207 million designated maximum rookie contract extension with the Charlotte Hornets, The Athletic reported. The deal could be worth $250 million-plus if Ball earns All-NBA, MVP or defensive player of the year honors this season. The 2022 All-Star averaged a career-high 23.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 8.4 assists in 2022-23, his third season with the Hornets after being selected with the third overall pick in the 2020 draft.

Brook Lopez headed back to the Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks are keeping their core together, reaching a deal with center Brook Lopez to return on a two-year, $48 million contract, a person with direct knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports under the condition of anonymity. The Bucks are also bringing back Khris Middleton, giving the core of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Middleton and Lopez a chance to win another title, this time under first-year head coach Adrian Griffin.

Pacers acquiring Obi Tobbin in trade with Knicks

The New York Knicks are finalizing a deal that will send forward Obi Toppin to the Indiana Pacers for two second-round picks, ESPN reported. Harrison Barnes, Kings agree to extension

Forward Harrison Barnes reached a three-year, $54 million extension to remain with the Sacramento Kings. Barnes averaged 15 points and 4.5 rebounds and shot 47.3% from the field last season. The 31-year-old Barnes started every game last season – one of only three NBA players to do so – and helped the Kings reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Josh Hart commits to Knicks for 2023-24

New York Knicks guard Josh Hart, who had a productive season, including some strong games in the playoffs, picked up the option year on his contract for $12.9 million, ESPN and The Athletic reported. Hart averaged 10.4 points and 7.4 rebounds and shot 47.9% from the field in 11 playoff games.

What is a restricted free agent?

This is where it gets a little complicated. A restricted free agent can sign an offer sheet with any team, but the player’s original team has the chance to retain the player by matching the offer.

For example, if restricted free agent Austin Reaves is offered a contract by the San Antonio Spurs, the Los Angeles Lakers have the right to match the offer and retain Reaves. The NBA says the original team has the “right of first refusal.”

Restricted free agents exist in these situations: following the fourth year of a rookie contract for former first-round picks; veteran free agents who have three seasons or less of experience; and a player coming off a two-way contract who previously spent at least 15 days on an NBA roster the prior season. (A two-way contract allows a player to suit up for an NBA team or its G League affiliate).
