Navarre, Northview baseball earn mercy-rule wins in district quarterfinals | AREA ROUNDUP

District tournament baseball and softball is officially here. Several teams extended their season at least one more day after quarterfinal victories.

Elsewhere, Gulf Breeze beach volleyball is moving on in the regional tournament.

Here's a roundup of area games that occurred on Monday, April 29.

Baseball

Navarre 10, Milton 0: The Raiders picked up a mercy-rule win in five innings over the Panthers in the District 1-6A quarterfinals.

Navarre got off to a hot start, scoring eight runs in the first inning. With the insurance, the Raiders tacked on a run in the second and fifth innings to enforce the 10-run rule.

Ryan Ragan led Navarre with two hits, including a double, adding two RBIs and a run. Pierce Brooks tacked on a single with two runs and two RBIs. Jacob McDonald singled with two runs and an RBI. Logan Hand doubled with an RBI. Bo Shipley tallied a hit and a run.

Cole Crocker posted a hit and an RBI. J.P. Rivers, Gabriel Mitchell, Ashton Sieg and Ace Demotts all plated a run. Mitchell and Lane Kasper also tacked on RBIs.

On the mound, Crocker threw 3.1 innings, striking out six batters. He surrendered four hits. Kasper fanned two batters in one inning, while Luke Maher also recorded 0.2 innings.

Stats for Milton were not reported.

The Panthers end their year with a 12-10 overall record. Navarre (8-15) plays top-seeded Pace in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Booker T. Washington 3, Pine Forest 2: The Wildcats held on for a narrow one-run win over Pine Forest in the District 1-5A quarterfinals.

Booker T. plated a run in the second inning and two more in the third frame to round out its scoring. The Eagles started to make a comeback, tacking on two runs in the fourth frame, but Pine Forest couldn't find the equalizer late in the game.

J.R. Riley led the Wildcats with a double and a run. Nick Freeman tacked on a hit and an RBI. Davis Sherman and J.J. Startzel both singled in the game. B.J. Johnson and Donovan Camacho both scored a run. Ricky Bucco tallied an RBI.

On the mound, Travis Bright earned the win with 4.2 innings pitched, fanning seven batters. He allowed two hits, two runs (one earned) and six walks. Parker Zareck, in 2.1 innings, struck out five batters, allowing two hits and a walk.

Colton Swiers had a four-hit night for the Eagles, adding a triple, with an RBI. Char'son Floyd had two hits while Connor Baer tacked on a single. Malik Cannon and Andrew Broadley both plated a run.

Bryant Mason threw three innings on the mound, striking out two batters. He allowed three hits, three runs and two walks. Swiers, also in three innings, struck out four batters, surrendering a hit and a walk.

The Eagles' season ends with a 6-19 overall record. Booker T. (7-17) plays top-seeded Escambia in the district semifinals on Tuesday.

Bay 7, Pensacola 1: The Tigers saw their season end in the District 1-4A quarterfinals.

Bay scored all seven runs unanswered, plating two runs in the third, four in the fifth and another in the sixth. Pensacola erased the shutout in the top of the seventh inning, but the Tornadoes held on for the win.

Julio Guzman led Pensacola with two hits and a run. Terrance Bowens singled with an RBI. Rupert Sproles added a double, while Braylen Steel had a single in the game.

Guzman recorded the loss on the mound, striking out eight batters in five innings. He allowed four hits, six runs (two earned) and five walks. Sproles, in one inning, fanned one batter, surrendering two hits and an unearned run.

The Tigers end the 2024 season with a 9-15 record.

Rocky Bayou Christian 11, L.E.A.D. Academy 0: The Lions fell in a mercy rule after five innings on the road in the District 1-2A quarterfinals.

The Knights plated three runs in the first, one run in the second and third, and six more in the fourth. RBC held L.E.A.D. scoreless in the top of the fifth to enforce the run rule.

Stats for L.E.A.D. Academy were not reported.

The Lions end their season with an 0-16 record.

Northview 17, Laurel Hill 2: The Chiefs left little doubt that they would secure victory over Laurel Hill in the District 1-1A quarterfinals.

Laurel Hill opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning, but Northview plated three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Hoboes added another run in the third before Northview exploded for 14 runs in the bottom of the third.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Chiefs enforced the 15-run mercy rule.

Grayson Sheffield led the Chiefs with three hits, four RBIs and a run. Jackson Bridges tacked on a pair of hits with three runs and three RBIs. Jase Portwood had a single and a double with three RBIs and two runs. Dane King doubled with three runs and two RBIs. Brady Smith tallied a single with pair of runs and an RBI.

Kelan Jurey, Rylan Minor (2), Tyler Gilmore and Taylor Curtis (2) all plated runs. Wyatt Scruggs (2) and Jayden White posted RBIs.

White also threw a complete game on the mound, striking out four batters in four innings. He allowed two hits, two runs and four walks.

Northview (10-14) will played Central, the top seed in the district, in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Softball

Escambia 6, Pine Forest 3: The Gators claimed victory in the District 1-5A quarterfinals over the Eagles.

Escambia opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning, adding another in the fourth. Pine Forest erased the shutout with a run in the top of the fifth before the Gators plated two more in the bottom of the inning for some buffer room.

Pine Forest tacked on two more runs in the sixth, but the Gators held on for the win.

Olivia Bourgeois led Escambia with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Madison Degnan tacked on two hits with two runs. Madelynn Ladner singled twice in the game. Halina Bell posted a hit, a run and an RBI.

Gwen Verble singled with an RBI. Laney Moss added a hit and a run. Kaylee Parker tallied a hit.

Ladner threw a complete game at the pitcher's circle, striking out 12 batters in seven innings. She allowed four hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks.

Sarah Rudd and Ellie Rudd both had a hit and a run for the Eagles. Ranya Preyer tacked on a hit and an RBI. Alexzandria Holston singled in the game. Kimora Bennett added a run.

Ellie Rudd threw a complete game, striking out six batters in six innings. She allowed six hits, six runs (three earned) and two walks.

Pine Forest's season ends with a 7-10 record. Escambia (9-12) plays No. 1 seed Gulf Breeze on Tuesday in the semifinals.

Choctaw 15, Booker T. Washington 0: A quick start propelled the Indians to a run-rule win over the Wildcats in three innings in the District 1-5A quarterfinals.

Choctaw put up nine runs in the first inning and another in the second for a quick start. With five more runs in the third frame, the Indians ended the contest in three innings.

Booker T. was no-hit in the game.

Cassidy Bardin threw 2.1 innings for the Wildcats, allowing four hits, 15 runs (11 earned) and 11 walks.

Booker T.'s season ends with a 6-16 overall record.

Arnold 17, Pensacola 0: The Marlins claimed victory in mercy-rule fashion after three innings in the District 1-4A quarterfinals.

Arnold went on an 11-run tear in the first inning to take a strong lead, adding six more runs in the second frame. With a scoreless third frame, the Marlins held on for the 15-run rule.

Amari Howard tallied Pensacola's lone hit in the game.

Sidney Jauncey threw the whole game for Pensacola, striking out two batters. She allowed 13 hits, 17 runs and three walks.

Pensacola's year ends with a 1-14 record.

FAMU DRS 43, L.E.A.D. Academy 15: A high-scoring affair saw the Baby Rattlers take victory in the District 1-2A quarterfinals.

FAMU DRS initially led 3-1 after the first inning before the Rattlers went on a 16-run tear in the second frame, to go up 19-2 after the second inning. Both teams plated a lot of offense in the third inning, but FAMU still led 27-13.

Another 16-run inning from the Rattlers in the fourth, plus two runs in the inning from L.E.A.D., and the game ended in a run rule after four innings.

Stats for L.E.A.D. Academy were not reported.

The Lions' season ends with a 6-9 record.

Paxton 17, Central 16: Another high-scoring affair, this time in Class 1A, had the Bobcats come out with a one-run win in the quarterfinals.

Paxton initially went up 9-0 after two innings before Central got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second frame. Paxton posted two more runs in the top of the fourth. The Jaguars took the lead with 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning, 14-11.

The Bobcats tied the game up with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, only to be matched by another two runs in the sixth inning from Central. The Bobcats scored three runs in the top of the seventh to secure the game-winning run.

Addie Grace Holland led Central with a pair of hits, including a triple, adding a run and two RBIs. Kathryn Riley tacked on two hits with a run and an RBI. Shelby Zigler posted a single and a double with two runs and an RBI. Kylie Goodale, also with a single and a double, had a run and two RBIs.

Anna Carden crushed a home run with four runs scored and two RBIs. Gracie Jernigan tacked on a single with two runs and an RBI. Chloe Lowery tallied a hit, a run and an RBI. Natalie Blair singled and scored a run. MaryAnne Gunter (2) and Bri Martin both plated runs.

Tenley Smarr threw a complete game for Central, striking out seven batters in six innings. She allowed 12 hits, 17 runs (nine earned) and eight walks.

The Jaguars' season ends with a 13-8 record.

West Florida 15, Godby 0: The Jaguars picked up a dominant victory in the District 1-4A quarterfinals.

Inning-by-inning scores were not reported. Individual stats were not available.

West Florida (15-10) moves on to play Arnold in the district semifinals on Tuesday.

Beach volleyball

Gulf Breeze 5, Beachside 0: The No. 1 team in the state is moving on in the region tournament.

Gulf Breeze won all five pairings over Beachside by scores of 2-0. Individual stats were not reported.

The Dolphins (18-0) play Lincoln in the second play-in game of the Region 1-1A tournament on Thursday.
