Nashville Predators lose to Detroit Red Wings in overtime 5-4

The Nashville Predators look to return to winning form after two losses in a row when they face the Detroit Red Wings on Friday at Little Caesars Arena.

Last time out, Nashville lost 5-2 to Carolina on Wednesday at Bridgestone Arena with Juuse Saros being pulled in-game for the second time in four games. Predators prospect Yaroslav Askarov made his second NHL appearance in replacing Saros.

The Predators continue to hold a wild-card spot halfway through the regular season.

Detroit has lost nine of 11 games after an excellent start to the season. That stretch includes a 6-3 loss to Minnesota on Wednesday.

Nashville Predators score, live updates, highlights vs. Detroit Red Wings

Predators lose to Red Wings in overtime 5-4

The overtime ends 2:13 in. Lucas Raymond scores his 11th goal of the season for the Red Wings. Nashville outshot Detroit 37-23. It is the first overtime loss of the season for the Predators, who are 19-16-1. Detroit is 17-15-4.

End of third period, on to overtime

Flurry of goals, score tied 4-4

It's quiet for the first half of the third period, and then the Red Wings explode for two goals in two minutes, followed by the Predators' score a minute later.

Alex DeBrincat, he of the kerfuffle at the end of the second period, scored at 10:31 off a pass from J.T. Compher to tie it. Alexandre Carrier tried to block the shot by sliding, but Compher lifted the puck over his stick to get to DeBrincat.

Jake Walman has his second goal of the game off a pass from DeBrincat for the Red Wings to get their lead back 4-3.

The Predators did not deflate. Gustav Nyquist scores, also his second of the game, at 7:36. It is his eight goal of the season.

End of second period

A kerfuffle to close the second period. Dante Fabbro is in a mess with J.T. Compher in front of the net. Yakov Trenin even skates in to separate the two.

And in the corner, Alex DeBrincat takes on . . . captain Roman Josi. This is Josi's third fight of his 12-year NHL career and first in five years.

Predators take first lead of game

At 6:11, Filip Forsberg scores his second goal of the game, sneaking down in perfect position toward the goal. The Predators are capitalizing on their battles. Colton Sissons hits Moritz Seider in the right corner, and Seider, looking for help, sends the puck weakly behind the net. Jake Walman goes to retrieve it, followed closely by Tommy Novak, who forces the turnover. The puck gets to Forsberg's stick for the 3-2 lead.

Before that, at 8:20 in the second period, former Red Wings player Gustav Nyquist ties up the score 2-2 with a shorthanded goal, anticipating the puck going to the point and breaking out down the right side.

End of first period

Red Wings score late

One of the most frustrating moments can be when the opponent scores in the last 30 seconds of a period. The Red Wings did just that, with Jake Walman scoring with 21.6 seconds left in the first period off Michael Rasmussen's pass.

Juuse Saros robs Patrick Kane

Saros makes a jaw-dropping save during a penalty kill. Mayhem in front of the net, with a number of Predators players trying to help but are actually impeding Saros' movement. Moritz Seider gets the puck, passes across the slot to a wide-open Patrick Kane, who shoots.

Saros stretches over his teammate and snags the puck with his glove. Miracle achieved. Kane droops.

Filip Forsberg ties it up

Filip Forsberg scores his first goal in five games at 9:17 of the first period. Gustav Nyquist was battling Ben Chiarot behind the net. The puck popped out toward goalie Alex Lyon's blocker side, and a speeding Forsberg beelined in, snapping in the shot for his 17th goal of the season. The Predators are showing a lot of physicality today.

Red Wings score shorthanded goal, lead 1-0

Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin whips a wicked wrist shot during the penalty kill. Lucas Raymond had been in the penalty box for hooking Luke Schenn. Larkin's goal, unassisted, took place four minutes into the game. It was his 13th goal of the season.
