Nashville Predators blow three-goal lead, lose in overtime to Ottawa Senators

The Nashville Predators finished a three-game road trip on Monday against the Ottawa Senators by scoring three goals during the first period and allowing three goals during the second.

Three periods were not enough to decide the game: The Senators’ 4-3 victory was thanks to Claude Giroux’s goal with 1 minute, 24 seconds left in overtime.

Michael McCarron, Philip Tomasino and Yakov Trenin each scored during the first 20 minutes to put Nashville ahead 3-0.

But Drake Batherson, Tim Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk answered with goals in the second period to tie the score 3-3.

Nashville’s three first-period goals chased Senators goalie Mad Sogaard from the game after he allowed three goals on 10 shots.

Predators defenseman Alexandre Carrier left the game not even five minutes into the second period and did not return.

Nashville returns home to play the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night, its last game until Feb. 10. The nine-day break includes the Predators' bye week and the NHL All-Star break. Filip Forsberg is the Predators' lone representitive.

The Predators (26-22-2) were coming off a 4-1 loss to Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, the Oilers' 16th consecutive victory.

Nashville, which has lost four of five, began Monday one point out of the second wild-card playoff spot in the Western Conference and ended the night with 54 points, the same as the Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues.

The Senators (19-25-2) have the fewest points (38) in the Eastern Conference.

Philip Tomasino shoveled a shot over the shoulder of 6-foot-7 Senators goalie Mads Sogaard with 3:30 left in the first to give Nashville a 2-0 lead. It was Tomasino’s sixth goal of the season. Tommy Novak earned his 14th assist, and Cody Glass his second.

Michael McCarron took advantage of a bound off the glass and blasted the puck past Mads Sogaard with 11:34 remaining in the first period to put the Predators ahead 1-0. It was McCarron’s seventh goal of the season and the Predators’ first in the first period in 10 games.

Roman Josi earned his 33rd assist of the season. Philip Tomasino earned his 13th.
