NASCAR suspends Bayley Currey indefinitely for failed drug test
NASCAR announced Thursday evening that part-time Cup Series driver Bayley Currey has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of the series’ substance abuse policy.
Currey, 22, tweeted that he tested positive because of a pre-workout supplement he uses that included an ingredient that’s on NASCAR’s banned substance list.

“This weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway, NASCAR informed me that I failed a random drug test administered last week,” Currey said. “I spoke with NASCAR’s doctor where he explained that I had DMHA (2-amino-5-methylhexane) in my system. I take a pre-workout supplement, Juggernaut Irate, and this ingredient is indeed in the supplement. I was obviously not aware that I was violating NASCAR’s substance abuse policy.”
Currey is the second NASCAR driver suspended for failing a drug test in 2019. Earlier this season, Truck Series driver Austin Wayne Self was suspended for failing a preseason drug test — though Self competed in three races and was sidelined for two others for allegedly other reasons before his NASCAR suspension became official.
Currey has made nine Cup Series starts in 2019, all for Rick Ware Racing, with a best finish of 25th at Pocono in May. He was set to be in the team’s No. 52 car Saturday evening at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Currey made his first NASCAR national series start in 2017 when he drove in three Truck Series races.
