NASCAR QNA: Ranking the Ryan Preece Daytona wreck, as well as Kurt Busch

Where do you rank Ryan Preece’s tumble on Daytona’s Scary Meter?

With modern technology, within seconds you can revisit any number of wild crashes at the World Center of Racing.

The scariest I ever saw was Ricky Rudd’s in the 1984 Busch Clash, probably because I was down there and felt practically within arm’s length of his hissing relic when it finally came to rest.

As for the sheer number (and speed) of barrel rolls, go watch Maynard Troyer’s tumble off Turn 2 in the 1971 Daytona 500. Even in slow motion, it’s hard to count the flips, but the narrator says 18 and who’s to second-guess at this stage?

Preece flipped 10 or 11 times, depending on when you start counting, and both men walked away, which makes us feel OK with dissecting these crashes, of course.

ON THE POLL Who will win the NASCAR Cup Series title? Busch? Buesch-er? Harvick? ... Bubba? You tell us!

Where does Kurt Busch rank among NASCAR’s all-time greats?

Earlier this year, the Daytona Beach News-Journal’s racing guys (both of us) put together our all-time top 75 and Kurt ranked 30th, just behind Bobby Isaac and in front of Brad Keselowski.

With Kurt making his retirement official last week, Kez will likely pass him soon, as will Martin Truex (No. 33). Safe to say Kurt will stay in the top 50 for a very long time.

SPEED FREAKS Who joins Chase Elliott in NASCAR's disappointment lineup

His career was unique for the way he transitioned from “bad boy” to elder statesman, but also for how he was able to win everywhere with various teams. And don’t forget his sixth-place run in his lone Indy 500 in 2014.

Truly a great talent, even if he might only be second best in his own family.
