Name your team: Brockton's pro baseball squad opens voting on five name finalists
BROCKTON — Fans are choosing the name of Brockton's new baseball team. New England Professional Baseball announced five finalists on Wednesday.
The team said it fielded more than 1,300 nominations. The finalists, based on number of submissions, are listed below. Through Saturday, you can visit the team's website at www.newenglandprobaseball.com and vote for your favorite.
The team will bring pro baseball back to Brockton. It will share its homefield of Campanelli Stadium with the amateur-prospect team the Brockton Rox. Between them, the teams have 80 home games scheduled for the upcoming seasons.
The team says the person who nominated the winning name will get a VIP package including season tickets, an "I Named This Team" plaque and the honor of throwing out the first pitch in team drip.
At least two names that seemed to have strong support didn't make the top five. If you were Team Boxers or Team Shoemakers, you're out of luck. But here are your five choices:
New England Nor'easters
Named for the region's famous storms that can change the weather from one season to another in a matter of hours, this is the only weather-related name option.
New England Grinders
This option could refer to the Boston English word for a sub sandwich. Or the never-ending hustle displayed by the Brockton area's entrepreneurs. Or you might think of it as a coffee reference.
New England Chowdahheads
Chowder fans have good representation in the list of finalists. No Manhattan chowders allowed!
New England Knockouts
Only one finalist connects with Brockton's storied boxing tradition. This option might appeal to people who wanted a Brockton-centric name despite the team being named for New England instead of the city itself.
New England Chowdah Monsters
A second option for folks who love chowder.
Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4.
