The MVP Case for Russell Wilson
When Russell Wilson entered the NFL in 2012, he joined a Seattle Seahawks team that already featured superstars on the defensive side of the ball and a top-flight running back in Marshawn Lynch that controlled the offense. Essentially, Wilson was a babysitter with the job of making the occasional good play to win games. Which he did! In his second season, Wilson and the Seahawks won their franchises' first Super Bowl. Now, six years since that victory and with so many of the stars retired or on different teams, Wilson has taken the reigns of the Seahawks and has played like a superstar.
As the mid-point of the season has passed, the award prediction is now full-blown. Here is the case for the most prestigious award, the Most Valuable Player, to be given to Russell Wilson.
Individual Success
Currently, Wilson leads the NFL in passing touchdowns with 23 over the course of ten games. At the same time, he has tied Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers for the fewest interception with only 2. Wilson also holds the highest passer rating the league at 114.9% and is fourth in passing yards. In previous seasons, Wilson has shown have a very talented arm. In 2017, Wilson led the league in touchdown passes with 34 and held the best passing rating back in 2015.
Team Success
An important part of the "Most Valuable Player" conversation is that second word. If a player performs excellent, but the team struggles to win games or finishes with a poor record, how valuable was the player truly? Well, good for Wilson, this is not an issue. Since 2012, the Seahawks have only missed the postseason once with Wilson at the helm and they can be penciled in this year as well. The Seattle Seahawks are 8-2 at the moment, in complete control of one of the two Wild Card spots for the postseason, and only one game back from the division and the top seed in the NFC altogether.
Off the Field
For this Halloween costume alone Wilson should win the MVP. With wife, singer Ciara, the pair cosplayed as Jay-Z and Beyonce in the video "Apes**t." Hands down this were the best Halloween costume and best couples costume of the holiday. Maybe the QB was not dodging linemen trying to break his bones, but this certainly has to be discussed for Wilson's campaign.
