The TOM's Supra is an icon. The Toyota that won the 1997 JGTC title is a Gran Turismo mascot, an origin point for Super GT as we know it today, and a winner despite swapping the car's signature 2JZ-GTE I-6 for a four-cylinder rallying/hillclimb/IMSA engine. All of that makes it a hit with most car enthusiasts, but it still is not something you might associate in your mind with NASCAR racing. Brad Keselowski and his RFK Racing team are going to change that.

Every Summer, Darlington Raceway hosts a "throwback" race weekend that encourages teams and sponsors to dive into their history books for a historic alternate livery. Teams usually opt for something out of the past of their program or their driver, but some choose to instead go with the history of a sponsor. RFK Racing is sponsored by Castrol, so the team chose to look at a few historic Castrol liveries before deciding on their Darlington scheme. The TOM's Supra won out, and the best Castrol livery ever run will make its NASCAR debut in May.

RFK Racing is a Ford team, so oddly enough, the most famous livery to ever adorn a Supra will run on a Mustang against Toyotas. As with other Darlington throwback races, Keselowski will be competing against a variety of other cars in their own retro schemes. That means the TOM's Supra livery will go head to head with a car in a Terry Labonte tribute, just as everyone might have expected back when both the Supra and Labonte were tearing up the track in the mid-Nineties.
