Murfreesboro area fall sports Week 7 top performers: PCA tops MTCS in region finals

Providence Christian's volleyball team defeated rival MTCS for the second consecutive time, this one coming in the region finals Thursday.

The Lady Lions swept the Lady Cougars 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-18) after the previous three matches (including PCA's district championship win) went five sets.

PCA earns a bye in the first round of the DII-A state round of 12 and will play on Saturday, Oct. 14 in the round of eight. MTCS will host a round of 12 contest Tuesday against Tipton Rosemark.

THURSDAY

Volleyball

Lily Watson, MTCS: Had 14 kills in a 3-0 loss to PCA in the region finals.

Haley Hudson, MTCS: Had 32 assists and 15 digs.

Anna Clay Shirley, MTCS: Had 12 kills, 13 digs and two aces.

Jada Burns, MTCS: Had eight kills.

McKenna Shotwell, PCA: Had 22 kills, 19 digs and four aces in a 3-0 win over MTCS in the region finals.

Sadie Kroeger, PCA: Had 18 kills, 17 digs and an ace.

Lillie Meinhart, PCA: Had 38 assists, 16 digs, four blocks and two aces.

Kayte-Madison Bjornstad, PCA: Had nine blocks.

TUESDAY

The volleyball teams from Middle Tennessee Christian and Providence Christian will play again, and this time for the DII-A region title.

The Lady Cougars swept Goodpasture 3-0 in one region semifinal while the Lady Lions downed DCA 3-0 in the other.

The two teams will play Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at PCA in the region finals. Both teams have already secured state round of 12 berths.

Eagleville's volleyball team captured the District 6-A championship with a 3-0 win over Forrest and will play Sale Creek in the region semis.

The Central Magnet volleyball team won the 8-AA championship with a 3-1 win over Community.

Volleyball

Haley Hudson, MTCS: Had 33 assists, becoming the school's all-time leader and surpassing 3,000 in her career in a 3-0 win over Goodpasture in the region semifinals. She also had 12 digs.

Anna Clay Shirley, MTCS: Had 10 kills and 17 digs.

Addison Burks, MTCS: Had 31 digs and three aces.

Jada Burns, MTCS: Had 13 kills.

Lily Watson, MTCS: Had 10 kills and two aces.

Lillie Meinhart, PCA: Had 33 assists, eight digs, four kills, three aces and two blocks in a 3-0 win over DCA in the region semifinals.

McKenna Shotwell, PCA: Had 25 kills, 25 digs and two aces.

Sadie Kroeger, PCA: Had 15 kills, 22 digs and an ace.

Soccer

Joanna LaForte, MTCS: Scored a goal in a 6-1 loss to Cannon County.

Taylor Genova, Stewarts Creek: Scored two goals in a 4-4 draw with Summit.

Camryn Merryman, Stewarts Creek: Had a goal and an assist.

Lillian Opie, Stewarts Creek: Scored a goal.

MONDAY

Providence Christian and Middle Tennessee Christian both advanced in the DII-A region volleyball tournament Monday, securing both spots in the state's round of 12.

The Lady Lions defeated Davidson Academy 3-0 and the Lady Cougars topped Friendship Christian to both advance to the region semifinals.

MTCS will play defending state champ Goodpasture and PCA will battle DCA on Tuesday, with both matches being at PCA.

Central Magnet's volleyball team advanced in the 8-AA tournament, sweeping Marshall County 8-0.

Anna Clay Shirley, MTCS: Had 15 kills, nine digs an an ace in a 3-0 win over Friendship Christian in the region quarterfinals.

Haley Hudson, MTCS: Had 31 assists, nine digs and two kills.

Addison Burks, MTCS: Had 28 digs and three aces.

Lily Watson, MTCS: Had 10 kills and two blocks.

Jada Burns, MTCS: Had nine kills and a block.

Sadie Kroeger, PCA: Had 15 kills, eight digs, a block and two aces in a 3-0 win over Davidson Academy in the region quarterfinals.

SATURDAY

Oakland's volleyball team won the District 8-AAA tournament championship for the second consecutive season Saturday at Rockvale.

The Lady Patriots swept through the tourney, defeating Blackman 3-0 in the semifinals and then knocking off Siegel 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-13) in the championship match.

"We've been working for this for years, since our freshman year," said Oakland senior Elisa Fries, who was named the district's regular-season MVP. "It's been a long road, but we're very proud that we made history, especially last year. We're so glad we carried it over to this year."

Siegel reached the finals with a 3-2 win over Rockvale in the semifinals. Blackman defeated Riverdale 3-2 in the opening round of the tourney.

After taking fall break off, the Lady Patriots and Lady Stars will battle in the Region 4-AAA tournament the following week.

Postseason superlatives were also awarded following the championship match. The include:

THURSDAY

Providence Christian's volleyball team captured the DII-A District 3 championship Thursday, defeating rival MTCS in five sets (21-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 16-14). Both teams advanced to the region.

Both teams begin region play Monday at home. MTCS will battle Friendship Christian while PCA will take on Nashville Christian.

Haley Hudson, MTCS: Had 44 assists, 22 digs and two aces in a 3-2 loss to PCA in the district championship match.

Anna Clay Shirley, MTCS: Had 19 kills and 23 digs.

WEDNESDAY

Central Magnet's girls golf team advanced to the TSSAA Class AA state tournament after winning the Region 5-AA tournament Wednesday.

The Lady Tigers shot a 163, four strokes better than Macon County. Lauren Powell shot a 79 and Anna Powell an 84.

Rockvale's Solia Mechling shot an 83 to be one of three individuals to also advance to state (along with Macon County's Mattie Goad and Reese Rexroat).

One area boys golfer advanced to the state tournament.

Rockvale's Aiden Sinclair reached state after a three-man playoff for the last two individual spots. His par on the first hole of the playoff advanced him, while Greenbrier's Carter Stroup defeated Oakland's Micah Freeman in the second playoff hole. Greenbrier's Nathan Meals also advanced as an individual.

Macon County advanced as a team, shooting a 316 and edging Rockvale by two strokes.

Volleyball

Cate Schroer, Siegel: Combined for 28 kills, four aces and 15 digs in wins over Ensworth (2-1) and Hillsboro (2-0).

Amelia Renshaw, Siegel: Combined for 41 assists and 18 digs.

Mia McGrath, Siegel: Had seven kills in a win over Hillsboro.

Madison Lansdown, Siegel: Combined for six aces and 29 digs.

TUESDAY

Middle Tennessee Christian and Providence Christian will play in the DII-A District 3 volleyball championship match Thursday (7 p.m.) after both won semifinal matches Tuesday.

The Lady Cougars (37-1) swept BGA 3-0 and the Lady Lions (27-3) edged Grace Christian 3-2 (15-13 in the fifth) to set up the title match.

GOLF: PCA's two-time defending state champion girls squad captured the DII-A District 3 title and advanced to the region. The Lady Lions shot a 132, bettering The Webb School by eight strokes. BGA finished with an 157.

PCA junior Isabella Johnson was low medalist with a 64, while teammate Carolyn Pardue was next with a 68.

On the boys' side, PCA's Carter Burks fired a 70 and MTCS' James Massengale shot a 74 and Cason Hill an 81 to advance to the region as individuals.

The Lady Cougars (36-1) defeated Columbia Academy 3-0 and the Lady Lions swept The Webb School 3-0.

MTCS plays BGA in the semifinals Tuesday at 5 p.m. at MTCS. PCA will play Grace Christian (a 3-1 winner over FRA) in Tuesday's other semifinal.

GOLF: Eagleville's boys golfers shot a 331 to capture the district title Monday. Koltt Bassham fired a 74 to lead the Eagles. Cason Lamb and Brody Gleason each fired an 85 and Carson Wheeler shot an 87 for Eagleville.
