Muckerheide re-writes record book at ND
Mar. 19—GREENSBURG — With the sectional loss by North Decatur this year at South Ripley, North's Kaden Muckerheide's high school basketball career came to an end.
With the conclusion of his stellar four years, the record book for the Chargers' basketball program will need some re-writing.
Muckerheide poured in 33 points in the sectional semifinal loss to Switzerland County. Those points elevated the senior guard to the top of the list in North boys basketball history.
Muckerheide finished with 1,340 points to become the all-time leading scorer. He is also the all-time leader in assists with 347, steals with 173, free throws attempted with 446, free throws made with 324, games played with 94 and wins with 53.
Muckerheide also holds the record for most assists in a season with 172 and the single game assist record with 12.
Other accolades earned on the hardwood by Muckerheide include District 3 All-Star Team through the HBCA, academic honors through the HBCA and MHC All-Conference for three seasons.
It was recently announced by Hoosier Basketball Magazine that Muckerheide has been invited to the Top 60 Workout.
"This is a prestigious honor extended to the top 60 seniors that played basketball across the state of Indiana. We have only had one other player at North Decatur High School ever be given this honor (Isaac Loechle in 2011)," Coach PJ Metz said.
Setting records is just one way Muckerheide overcame obstacles in his path.
Some may not know that Muckerheide overcame major health issues when he was just 12 years old. A tumor was discovered in his jaw and he had to have surgery to replace the jaw bone. It was reconstructed from his right fibula.
The young Charger had to learn to walk again before he could run. But once he got going, he never looked back. Muckerheide became a standout wide receiver and defensive back for the football team and this winter put his name among the best to hit the hardwood at North.
His positive attitudue and work ethic is an inspiration to those around him.
"Kaden is a coach's dream when it comes to leading by example. His over-the-top work ethic, coupled with his gym rat attitude, made it very obvious that he was going to be a special player. His commitment and motivation were never more on display then when he overcame his major surgery in elementary. Most athletes may use this as a crutch or an excuse, but he never let this stop him from being the best," Coach Metz added.
