MSSU athletes have busy week ahead

Oct. 23—Missouri Southern State University has six teams in action this week, including a basketball scrimmage for both men's and women's teams on Tuesday.

Golf

The women's golf team continues a second day of Tulsa Cup play Tuesday at the Forest Ridge Golf Club.

The MSSU women's golf team last week played at the Mules National Golf Club in Warrensburg for the Midwest Intercollegiate, shooting a 619 team score that placed it seventh overall.

The men's golf team will travel to Orlando, Florida, on Oct. 30-31 to compete in the Citrus Intercollegiate at Champions Gate Golf Club.

The men's golf team last week was in the NCAA Regional Preview at Kickingbird Golf Course in Edmond, Oklahoma, shooting an 849 overall team score that placed fifth.

Volleyball

The women's volleyball team will compete at 6 p.m. Friday at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center against the Central Oklahoma Bronchos, and again at 7 p.m. Saturday against Pittsburg State University, also at Leggett & Platt.

The volleyball team fell to the Hornets of Emporia State during an away game last week. The Hornets took the match 3-0. ESU took the first set 25-13, the second set 25-16 and the final set 25-23.

Southern also lost to the No. 21-ranked Washburn Ichabods on Saturday in their final road series. Washburn won the first set 25-11. The Lions then evened the score with 25-15 win. The Ichabods won the third set 25-12 and the fourth set 25-18, taking the match 3-1.

The Lions volleyball team is 12-11 (5-9 MIAA) for the year.

Football

Having defeated Lincoln 63-5 on Saturday, the Lions (4-4, 3-4 MIAA) will host Central Missouri (7-1) on Saturday. The Mules have now won five straight and haven't lost since a 38-37 final against PSU.

Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

UCM leads the series 25-16-2.

Soccer

The women's soccer team plays next at 6 p.m. Friday against Northwest Missouri at Hal Bodon Field, which will be their last home game, and then again at 1 p.m. Sunday against Central Missouri in the South Recreation Complex at Warrensburg.

The soccer team fell to Fort Hays State 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Hal Bodon Field.

The team then marked Senior Day on Sunday, losing 2-1 to the University of Nebraska-Kearney at Hal Bodon Field.

Six seniors were celebrated prior to kickoff: Lilly Doneghue, Angel Chase, Jori Hays, Lariah Boone, Maya Greenquist and Banner Williams.

The loss drops MSSU to 0-14-2 (0-8-1 MIAA) on the season.

Men's and women's basketball

The men's and women's basketball teams will scrimmage at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center.

The men's season begins at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in the Central Region Tipoff Challenge against Minnesota State-Moorhead at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, followed by a game against Bemidji State at 1 p.m. Saturday, also at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

The women begin play with an exhibition game at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, against Wichita State at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas. Their season opener will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, against Harding at White Auditorium in Emporia, Kansas, as part of the MIAA/GAC Crossover. They will play again at 11 a.m. Saturday against Henderson State.

Cross country

The Missouri Southern women's cross country team finished second and the men's team came in fourth last week at the MIAA Cross Country Championships on Friday at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia.

The Lions will be back at home Nov. 4, when they will host the NCAA Division II Central Region Championships. Southern will also play host to the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championships on Nov. 18.
