Morris Hills, Randolph capture Morris County Relays team titles

RANDOLPH — Alexander Flynn was racing the clock before he even got on the track at Morris County Relays.

The Morris Hills senior was taking the Advanced Placement Computer Science A exam on Wednesday afternoon. So Scarlet Knights assistant coaches Aaron King and Mike Baird scrambled to come up with a plan to get Flynn in place on time.

Michele Flynn picked her son up from Morris Hills at 4 p.m., and drove him to Randolph for the meet, which was slated to start at 4:30. King had given Alexander strict instructions to jog down the hill from the parking lot in front of the high school to the track, and the begin a dynamic warmup.

The intermediate hurdles was being called before Alexander Flynn had even arrived. But he just made it to the starting line – and posted a personal-best 56.82 seconds, second overall behind Morristown junior Jason Meza. Flynn also anchored Morris Hills’ 4x200 with a late surge to win by a tenth of a second and anchored the third-place 4x400.

The Scarlet Knights won the team title for the first time since 2011, surging past Delbarton with 86 points. Host Randolph captured its 11th girls team title in 15 years.

“Last year, I didn’t compete that much. I was at the bottom of the team,” said Flynn, who wore a red scarf tied around his head while running. “I literally fell on my face (in the open 400) at the county championships. After that race, I knew I could take it to another level. … I like competing. I always love a good race.”

The Rams captured only two gold medals – in the shot put and shuttle hurdles – but scored in 12. Morris Hills was also first in the triple jump, and tied Roxbury for the best long jump total. The Scarlet Knights also placed in 12 of the 16 events.

“We scraped together points from a lot of different events,” veteran Rams coach Kevin Higgins said. “This is a great meet, because it measures a team’s depth. It’s a bit of a chess match, figuring out how you’re going to use everybody.”
