Monroe-Woodbury relays excel at national track championships

Section 9 track and field athletes brought home six top-three medals and one championship at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals held last weekend in Philadelphia.

Monroe-Woodbury's foursome of John Urciuoli, Collin Catherwood, Shane Golio and Collin Gilstrap won the four-mile event in 17 minutes, 29.49 seconds.

Catherwood, Urciuoli and Gillstrap joined Ronald Rodriguez Perez to place second in the distance medley relay in 9:59.22.

Warwick's Luke Beattie won the freshman pole vault at 13 feet, 7.25 inches.

Ella Michelitch of Minisink Valley placed third in the girls high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches.

Cornwall's Ilunga Salerno placed third in the 110 hurdles for freshmen in 14.90 seconds. O'Neill's Wilson Rutherford V placed third in the 2-mile for middle schoolers in 10:06.30.

Competition was conducted in four divisions: championship, rising stars, freshmen and middle school.
