Monroe sets Section V postseason record with 78 points: Top sectional games Saturday

While points and wins for Monroe keep on coming, now the Red Jackets have set a Section V football record.

Monroe is in the Class B tournament semifinals after piling up a Section V postseason record 78 points during a shutout win over Rochester Prep.

Dundee scored 76 points in a game during the 2009 sectionals to set the previous record, according to a list on the sectionv.org website. The Monroe offense, defense and special teams scored touchdowns.

Khaya Moses, who threw seven touchdown passes during a win in the regular season for the Red Jackets, finished with five in this Class B quarterfinal at Monroe.

Messiah Hampton caught three of those touchdown throws. Robert Arnold scored on a 54-yard pass play and Tahjmir Mullins also had a touchdown reception.

Amari Colon returned two punts to the end zone, one 62 yards. Mullins scored after he intercepted a pass, and another two points came from the Monroe defense on a safety.

The Red Jackets (8-0) defeated Rochester Prep 48-0 on Sept. 16, as Monroe has scored at least 40 points in all but one of its wins this season. The exception was a forfeit. This is the first varsity season for Rochester Prep (1-8).

Monroe must move past No. 4 seed Wayne (5-3) in order to return to the Section V Class B final, where the Red Jackets lost 14-8 to Batavia after a pass similar to a "Hail Mary" play was caught in the end zone. Monroe will host the semifinal game against Wayne, probably on Nov. 4.

No. 3 Batavia will play at No. 2 Honeoye Falls-Lima in Class B semifinal during the same weekend.

Batavia Notre Dame 20, Oakfield-Alabama/Elba 14

While the sectional playoffs are just getting started, one thing was made clear by Batavia Notre Dame.

There will be a new Section V Class D champion after Batavia Notre Dame pushed out Oakfield-Alabama/Elba.

The score of the tournament quarterfinal at Oakfield-Alabama was 14-14 when Batavia Notre Dame quarterback Jay Antinore connected with Chase Antinore for a 79-yard pass play for a touchdown with 3:04 remaining in the fourth quarter.

A one-yard touchdown run by Antinore in the first quarter gave Batavia Notre Dame a 6-0 lead over the two-time defending champions. Avery Watterson, a junior on the Oakfield-Alabama/Elba team (3-6), gave the Aggies lead late in the first quarter when he scored on a one-yard touchdown run and kicked the point after touchdown.

Antinore's first of two touchdown passes came with 6:56 remaining in the second quarter, a 27-yard play with Jaden Sherwood, who then caught another pass for a two-point conversion. Batavia Notre Dame led 14-8.

The score was 14-14 at halftime after Austin Pangrazio threw a 13-year touchdown pass to Jack Cianfrini and another conversion kick by Watterson with 2:05 remaining in the second quarter.

Batavia Notre Dame (3-6) takes on No. 1 seed York/Pavilion in the Class D sectional semifinals on November 3 or 4.

"With everything this team has had to endure this season, I couldn't be more proud of the way they fought to the very last minute," Aggies coach Tyler Winter said. "You could write a book on the adversity they were dealt this fall.

"They handled themselves with class and integrity amidst it all."

Palmyra-Macedon 35, Newark/Marion 3

The Palmyra-Macedon Red Raiders have been more than competitive against other teams playing an independent schedule.

Palmyra-Macedon has defeated all six of its opponents, Greece Olympia/Odyssey twice, on its way to a 7-0 record.

Newark/Marion statisticians reported that Pal-Mac sophomore quarterback/running back/defensive back Camron Quick had two short touchdown runs and threw a touchdown pass against the Reds (5-3). The team had Quick 6 of 9 passing for 129 yards and with five rushing yards on three carries.

Quick connected with Keagan Hoesterey for the touchdown pass, and Mason Delmarie had a touchdown run, according to Newark/Marion. So did Cody Quick, as he was believed to have rushed for 129 yards on 15 carries. The Pal-Mac defense came up with two interceptions.

Tristan Harris, a junior on the Newark/Marion team, kicked a 32-yard field goal.

Clyde-Savannah, another independent team in Section V, is 8-0.
