Monroe, Bedford split doubleheaders for baseball, softball

MONROE – Monroe and Bedford did the splits twice Monday in Southeastern Conference Red doubleheaders.

Monroe won the first game for both baseball and softball before Bedford bounced back in the nightcap.

The first softball game was a thriller.

The game was scoreless until Emma Price delivered a two-run single for Bedford.

Back-to-back doubles by Aly Lewis and Alana Aulph, then Avery Leach came through with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to give Monroe a 3-2 lead.

Bedford’s Payton Pudlowski singled with two outs in the seventh and scored the tying run on a passed ball.

Monroe scored the winner in the bottom of the inning when Zaylee Richard doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alyssa Sroka. Pinch-runner Karlee Smithers scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Alexa Haefler.

Lewis doubled twice and Eloisa Reyes also had two hits to support strong pitching by Avery Collett, who struck out 11.

Pudlowski had two hits for Bedford.

Pudlowski homered, Brynn Eischen tripled and singled, Nyah Mullins and Torey Destatte doubled and Kaitlyn had two hits as Bedford took the second game 8-1.

Adrianna Kester earned the pitching win and helped herself with an RBI single.

Lewis had two hits for 4-7 Monroe while Aulph tripled and Ava Proffitt singled home the lone run.

Both baseball games were lopsided.

Monroe rolled to a 12-0 win in the opener, then Bedford scored five times in the opening inning to take the second game 11-6.

Monroe freshman Asher Simmons blasted a grand slam as one of his three hits in the first game. He finished with five RBIs.

That was more than enough for Trojan pitcher Carson Liedel who gave up just three hits and struck out 10.

“I thought Carson Liedel pitched his best game of the season in the first game,” Monroe coach Chris Clark said. “The sophomore was the most dominant pitcher I’ve seen in a long time. Bedford played and pitched well in Game 2.”

Breylon Richards also homered for Monroe, Logan Loveland, Brady and Brady Welch each notched a trio of hits and Garrett Gottschalk went 2-for-3.

Gabe Bock launched a three-run homer in the first inning of the second game for Bedford.

Bock finished 3-for-3 and drove in three runs along with Cade McNamara and Nolan Laskey. Issac Garrow was the winning pitcher.

Breylon Richards drove in three runs for Monroe and Liedel added two hits.

PREP BASEBALL

SMCC earns sixth win

MILAN – Jaden Paquette and Brennan Runyon came through with three hits and three RBIs each to lead St. Mary Catholic Central to a 13-2 victory over Milan Monday.

Nolan Moore drove in four runs and Cameron Cole struck out 11 to earn the win.

“We’re improving our small ball and base running,” SMCC coach Jared Janssens said of his 6-3 team.

Airport over .500

CARLETON – Airport pushed its record to 5-4 with a 13-1 win over Jefferson Monday.

Jack Mills went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs while Sean Langton was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs to support the pitching of Seth Jones.

Big inning lifts Huron

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron scored all of its runs in the fifth inning in a 5-1 win over Riverview Monday.

The Chiefs had just four hits, including two by Nate Morse.

Kyle Kantola earned the win with relief help from Jakob Furkas.

PREP SOFTBALL

Four hits for Zajac

CARLETON – Peyton Zajac went 4-for-4 to lead Airport to a 12-2 conquest of Jefferson Monday.

Olivia Tilley and Jillian Baker added two hits apiece, Hailey Boitnott drove in four runs and RaeAnn Drummond fanned nine batters in five innings.

Lindsey Gennoe singled and scored on a home run by Julia Perry for Jefferson's runs.

Knox knocks SMCC

MONROE – Reese Knox drove in four runs with three hits, including a double, to lead Milan past St. Mary Catholic Central 13-2 Monday.

Leila Daniels and winning pitcher Mariah Stines homered for Milan. Daniels and Tierra Ronayne each finished with three RBIs.

“Reese Knox came through with big hits with runners in scoring position,” Milan coach Kirk Davis said. “Our defense was solid, led by Mariah Stines and Leila Daniels behind the plate. This was a big Huron League win."

Callie Cousino led SMCC with two hits.

Sic homers three times

NEW BOSTON – Emma Sic blasted a trio of home runs and drove in five runs to lead New Boston Huron to a 15-8 win over Riverview Monday.

Erin Newman also homered for Huron. Maria Robbins and winning pitcher Rylie Greggo notched three hits each.

Birthday girl shines

WYANDOTTE – Aryanna Sandusky celebrated her birthday by going 2-for-3 to lead Gibraltar Carlson to a 6-4 win over Wyandotte Roosevelt Monday.

Addison Butt got the win for 7-2 Marauders, helped by solid defense that turned two double plays behind her.

TRACK AND FIELD

Mules top Monroe, Pioneer

TEMPERANCE – Bedford’s boys had a big day on its home track Monday, taking down Monroe 96-41 and Ann Arbor Pioneer 91-46.

Pioneer beat Monroe 85-51.

Sawyer Ulery won the 100, 200 and high hurdles to lead the way.

The Mules took the top four places in the high jump with Logan Thomas, Nicholas Balla, Jonas Enriquez and Jacob Yeager and in the long jump with Isaac Henman, Jacob Spoonmore, Quindan Labadie and Carter Hawk.

The Mules also got wins from Jack Durivage (800), Alex Beck (pole vault) and the 800 relay of Spoonmore, Owen Przybylski, Preson Brittain and Alex Mapes.

Teegan Simmons won the low hurdles and both weight throws for Monroe. Andrew Foshag won the 1,600).

Pioneer’s girls beat Bedford 112-25 and Monroe 109-28. Bedford clipped Monroe 87-46.

Pioneer took all but three events.

Monroe had wins from Corinna Aulph in the high jump and Alexandra Butler in the long jump. Bedford’s Ava Eby took the discus.

PREP SOCCER

Milan stops SMCC

MILAN – Milan triggered the eight-goal mercy rule early in the second half of an 8-0 win over St. Mary Catholic Central Monday.

Quinn Harrington, Bella Grippi and Alexandra Wickenheiser played well for 1-8-1 SMCC.

Burke posts shutout

NEW BOSTON – Brooklyn Burke posed her fourth consecutive shutout as New Boston Huron blanked Riverview 2-0 Monday.

Rylie Cassette and Maggie Warden scored goals, Shay Carpenter had an assist and Addison Dolencic stood out at center back.

“What a tough bunch of girls,” Huron coach Matt Livindini said.

PREP GOLF

Bedford wins tourney

SALINE – Bedford shot a round of 315 to finish eight strokes ahead of the rest of the field in the Saline Invitational Monday.

Taleon Guess and Carter Klawonn each shot 77, which tied for the second-best round of the day. Camden Price added a 78 and Boston Gallup 82.

Bedford’s junior varsity took sixth in the Jackson Lumen Christi Invitational led by Connor Urbanski with 81.

Vuich, Milnar on top

MONROE – Drew Vuich and Leo Milnar shared medalist honors at 43 as of St. Mary Catholic Central beat Jefferson 178-241 Monday.

Ben Peer led Jefferson with 54.

Whiteford clips Ida

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford’s Jess Saylor shot a medalist round of 39 in leading his team to a 171-179 win over Ida at Whiteford Valley Golf Course Monday.

Cabe Schober and Hunter DeBarr each added a 43 and Lincoln Joerin 46.

Zack Bailey paced Ida with a 42 and Davin Slater added 43.

Flat Rock balanced

NEW BOSTON – Ben Scully shot 42, Joel Scully and Mitchell Smith 44 and Kyle Couture 45 as Flat Rock beat Airport 175-190 Monday at Willow Metropark.

Airport’s Brayden Siders shared medalist honors with Scully with a 42.

ADULT SOCCER

Old crows fly

Goals by Parker Veit, Eric Wahoski and Travis Campbell carried Old Crows to a 6-1 win over Athletico in the Monroe Adult Coed Indoor Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday night.

Habeeb Bello scored the Athletico goal.

Ben Winter scored twice for Lamour Printing in a 4-2 victory over ABCD FC.
