Monroe, Bedford, Milan, Jefferson win invitationals
MONROE — With a trio of impressive wins Saturday, the Monroe’s girls soccer team rolled to the championship of the St. Mary Catholic Central Invitational.
The Trojans started with a 5-2 conquest of Ypsilanti, then blanked Allen Park 4-0 before finishing up with a 3-1 triumph over Wyandotte Roosevelt in the finals.
Brooke Trouten led Monroe with three goals and an assist. Emily Eshenroder finished with two goals and two assists. Chloe Pabin and Gabby Willis also had a pair of goals and Alexis McMahon netted a goal and two assists.
Lola Cacioppo and Becca Pace also scored goals.
Zoe Leach, Alle Marcero, Bella Reed and Willis led the defense.
Ida lost 4-0 to Ypsilanti in the third-place game after falling to Wyandotte 2-0 and tying SMCC 1-1.
SMCC also fell 5-0 to Wyandotte and 5-2 to Allen Park.
Nora Kinsey scored all three goals for the Kestrels, who are scrambling to reset their lineup after losing Leah DeSarbo to a broken ankle.
Quinn Harrington, Belle Morin, Alex Wickenheiser and Bella Grippi played well.

Bedford wears crown
GIBRALTAR — A pair of shutouts Saturday lifted Bedford to the championship of the Gibraltar Carlson Invitational.
The Mules beat Flat Rock 2-0 as Avry Madalinski scored both goals, while Elizabeth Klocek turned in a hat trick in a 3-0 verdict over the host team.
Madalinski and Klocek also logged assists along with Libby Ewing and Maddie Helpman.
Fabiana Valdez was in goal for both games. She got great defensive support from Brookelyn Horton, Presley Napier, Kami Morse, Lexi Ripple and Helpman.
Carlson beat Flat Rock 3-1.
Another hat for Emelian
DEARBORN — Gabby Emelian recorded her second consecutive hat trick as New Boston Huron stopped Dearborn Divine Child 4-0 Friday.
Ava Banko scored the other goal, Rylie Cassette and Maggie Warden were credited with assists and Brooke Burke recorded her third shutout.
“Addison Dolencic, Lily Cholette, Cali Eaton and Nhi Vo were superb in defending while the two sophomores Ava Banko and Maggie Mentzer controlled the whole middle,” Huron coach Matt Lividini said.
TRACK AND FIELD
Milan, Jefferson take titles
NEWPORT — Milan’s boys and Jefferson’s girls were the champions of the Jefferson Invitational on Saturday.
Jefferson ran away from the competition with 123 points to 86 for runner-up St. Mary Catholic Central.
Erie Mason (69) was third, Flat Rock (59) fourth, Ida (50.5) sixth, Airport (38) eighth and Milan (36) 10th.
Layla Tahmouch led the Bears with wins in the shot-put (35-4) and discus (106-2). Jenna Pilachowski took first in the 3,200 (11:21.87).
Pilachowski also was second in the 1,600 and third in the 800.
Girls Basketball: Ida's Jessica Schrader is a scoring champ, just like her mother
Alyssa Masserant had a second-place finish and Riley Peer, Mia Schroeder, Carli Smith and Katie Powell took third.
"Our girls were very proud to win their fourth Jefferson Invite in a row," Jefferson coach Phil Speare said. "They’ve taken great pride in it all of their years."
Reagan Higdon of Flat Rock won the 100 (13.49) and 200 (27.44) meters. She also ran with McKenna Williams, S’Miya Shaw and Sophia Chan on the winning 800-meter relay.
SMCC’s MaryAlice Lynch won the high hurdles (16.57) and Ida’s Julia Hughes (47.39) ruled the lows.
SMCC won three of the four relays with Lynch, long jump winner Ashley Ruhlig, Alaina Wille, Adela Illes, Macy Carlton, Bella LaFountain, Claire Lisker and Samantha LaFountain running legs.
Beth Sweeney of Erie Mason was the high jump champ (5-2).
Milan’s boys won a tight meet, scoring 85 points to clip Onsted by five points. Jefferson and Airport tied for third with 65, Erie Mason was fifth with 63, Flat Rock eighth with 56, Ida 10th with 29 and SMCC 11th with 22.
“It was a very tight meet,” Milan coach Chad Lawver said. “I am super proud of our team and especially the sprinters and hurdlers. This is where we were able to get most of our points today.”
The Big Reds won the two speed relays with Gavid Tomecek, Adam Johnson, Nolan Matley, Virgile Gruwez-Guinet and Noah Bussell.
Matt Foor of Airport claimed the shot-put in 50-9.5 and the discus in 149-10.
Michael Armetta of Jefferson swept the hurdles, going 15.53 in the highs and 40.84 in the lows.
Callum Bell of Airport took the 800 (2:04.96), Flat Rock’s Jacob Stanislawski ruled the 3,200 (9:47.44),
Stanislawski ran with Caleb Rollins, Nathan Vargo and Lucas Taraszkiewicz on Flat Rock’s winning 3,200 relay and Erie Mason took the 1,600 relay with Landen Nastale, Anderson Kaufman, Zach Worden and Parker Campbell.
Bedford is runner-up
WOODHAVEN – Second-place finishes by Jack Durivage, Cameron Varner, Alex Beck and the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relays helped Bedford take the runner-up plaque at the Woodhaven Classic Saturday.
Rubley, Vincent second
WHITMORE LAKE — Second-place finishes by Isaak Rubley (1,600) and Chani Vincent (pole vault) highlighted Dundee’s day at the Whitmore Lake Invitational Friday where the boys were third and the girls sixth.
Other standouts were Danny Kreger, Dallas Bensch, Braxx McBee, Braiden Whitaker, Kaiden Kominek, Sophia Nolff, Gwen Pahl, Lilly Ratliff, Elle White, Mia Gerweck, Maria Lora and Tori Morton.
BASEBALL
Huron beats Monroe twice
MONROE — New Boston Huron amassed 31 hits and 31 runs in sweeping Monroe 12-5 and 19-11 on Saturday to run its record to 11-1.
Jacob Furkas led the offense with four hits. Jackson Surma collected three hits and five RBIs, while Brad Hughes drove in four runs with his three hits. Also finishing with a trio of hits were Kyle Kantola, Jacob Handyside and Micah Smith.
Jax Jones 3-for-3 in the first game for Monroe.
In the second contest, Bruce Lechner recorded three hits, Brady Welch and Garrett Gottschalk added two hits, Logan Loveland walked four times and Breylon Richards stole for bases.
Two log first hit
ADRIAN – Sam Doyle and Tyler Rutkowski each collected their first varsity hit for St. Mary Catholic Central during a 19-2 rout of Lenawee Christian Saturday.
Anthony Caladino, Nolan Moore, Ryan Hayden and Philbert Dietrich notched two hits apiece and Ryan Hayden earned the win.
Flat Rock freshman excels
FLAT ROCK — Freshman first baseman Ty Bergeron went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead Flat Rock to a 12-0 victory over Lincoln Park Saturday.
Bergeron, who blasted his first home run, lifted his batting average to .667.
Anthony Hernandez and Gabe Harrison added two hits each.
The Rams also took the first game 11-1 as Drew Booth drove in two runs. Brendan Smouthers and Colten Williams earned the wins.
Dundee bats hot
ERIE — Cooper Buhl drove in seven runs and Ryan Zanger rang up five hits as Dundee (7-2) swept Erie Mason 14-5 and 8-0 Saturday.
Lephew three six strong innings to win the second game and Carter Ray won the opener. Other hitting standouts were Joey Brink, Ethan Layton, Jay Hickey and Chris LaFountain.
Whiteford wins shutout
OTTAWA LAKE — Freshman Tre Eitniear tossed a shutout with nine strikeouts to lead Whiteford past Swanton 12-0 Saturday.
Eitniear, Logan Keane, Mason VanBrandt and Logan Tammerine had two hits each for the 9-1 Bobcats.
Airport gets a split
SOUTHGATE – Carter Smith went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in a pair of runs to support the pitching of Casey Monroe in Airport’s 6-3 victory over Southgate Anderson Saturday.
The Jets (4-4) fell 8-1 to Allen Park earlier in the day.
Byrd, Beaudrie lift Bears
NEWPORT – Luke Beaudrie rang up five hits and Cody Byrd logged two in each game as Jefferson split with Melvindale Saturday. The Bears won the opener 5-2, then fell 6-4.
Owen Kostoff earned a pitching win with a save going to Jon Leffew. Gabe Hall and Brett Gennoe also hit well for 3-6 Jefferson.
Summerfield blanked twice
WATERFORD – Tyler Dafoe and Rylee Schiffler both had a hit in each game, but Summerfield was swept 5-0 and 3-0 by Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 5-0 and 3-0 Saturday.
SOFTBALL
Airport sweeps Monroe
CARLETON — Airport beat Monroe twice Saturday in two very different ways, winning the opener 20-11 and the second game 3-0.
Olivia Tilley went 7-for-7 in the doubleheader with eight stolen bases.
Alayna McDaniel was 3-for-3 and Raschel Weaver added two hits in the first game. RaeAnn Drummond pitched a shutout in the second game helped by great defense in center field by Jillian Baker.
Monroe came back from a 14-2 deficit in the first game with a nine-run rally in the fifth inning. Eloisa Reyes went 3-4 with a double and three RBI while Alana Aulph, Alexa Haefler and Ava Proffitt collected two hits each for the 3-6 Trojans.
Lead-off hitter sets pace
DUNDEE — Lead-off hitter Kennedy Irwin collected five hits, walked twice and scored five times to lead Dundee to a 6-3, 18-3 sweep of Westland John Glenn Saturday.
Kaylee Imo and Lauren Doane pitched well for the Vikings, Natalie Rath logged three hits and four RBI and Shay VanZandt homered.
Knox, Shines shine
BLISSFIELD – Mariah Stines pitched well and Reese Knox tripled to spark Milan to a 3-1 win over Blissfield Saturday.
Dean helps herself
MONROE — Winning pitcher Faith Dean went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI to lead St. Mary Catholic Central to a 10-5 victory over Jefferson Friday.
Camryn Geen had two hits, including a home run, and Abby Lechy went 2-for-2 for the Kestrels. Braelyn Runyon closed the game with five strikeouts.
Julia Perry and Cameron Carter had two hits each for Jefferson.
PREP GOLF
Huron rules jamboree
MONROE — It looks like a great race is brewing for the Huron League golf championship.
The league held its first jamboree of the season Thursday at Green Meadows Golf Course and the top five teams were separated by four strokes.
New Boston Huron took first with 334, St. Mary Catholic Central won a tiebreaker for second place after tying Grosse Ile with 335, Airport shot 336 and Flat Rock 338.
“It was tight, very tight,” Huron coach Eric Clark said.
“It was a battle all day,” said SMCC coach Jeff Kansier. “I knew it would be close, but not that close.”

Riverview (358), Milan (384) and Jefferson (423) rounded out the field.
Huron’s Nick Kosiba and Brayden Siders of Airport tied for medalist honors with 75.
Cameron Grant and Tony Trupiano each shot 86s for Huron and Johnathan Lerette added an 87.
“The supporting cast all did really, really well,” Clark said.
SMCC’s Drew Vuich tied for fourth at 78.
“Drew Vuich was outstanding,” Kansier said.
Vuich was supported by Thomas Rivard and John Beddoes with 84 and Domeneic Marvaso with 89.
Rounding out the lineup for Airport were Jake Trythall (84), Aaron Maddick (86) and Kenneth Stucki (95).
Top shooters for Flat Rock were Ben Scully (83), Joel Scully and Mitchell Smith (84) and Laran Rogier (87).
Milan’s Max Jenness shot 79 and Been Peer led Jefferson with 97.
Bedford places second
ADRIAN — Camden Price and Frank Soss took second place Saturday as Bedford finished a stroke behind Livonia Franklin for second place in the Adrian Madison Ryder Cup Tournament.
Carter Klawonn and Cobin Stelmaszak finished seventh.
Andy Barnes and Carter Bahn were fourth for Dundee and Zack Bailey-Davin Slater 12th for Ida.
PREP LACROSSE
Bedford’s Dlugosielski hot
ANN ABOR — Blake Dlugosielski, Brady Weirich and Cameron Barber scored three goals each to lead Bedford to an 11-9 win over Ann Arbor Huron on Friday.
Brennan McIntire scored the other two goals and added four assists.
Dlugosielski scored 10 goals in three games this week.
