FRIDAY'S BOYS BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS

STOW 74, BRECKSVILLE 70 (2OT) Junior Cam Marconi scored 25 points and senior Reece Raymond-Smith contributed 22 points to lead the visiting Bulldogs (11-9, 6-6) to a win Friday night over the host Bees (17-3, 12-1), who have already clinched the Suburban League National Conference championship.

Stow junior Austin Wilhoit and senior Tyler Fleishour combined to make five 3s and scored 11 points apiece. The Bulldogs outscored the Bees 30-22 during the fourth quarter and the two overtimes.

“We’re really proud of our boys tonight,” Stow coach David Close said. “They competed against a great and well-coached team in a tough gym to play. It was a real battle. We’re proud of the toughness our kids played with tonight. Nothing came easy. A lot of guys stepped up. We had four guys in double figures with Cam Marconi having a career high 25, Reece with 22 and Fleishour and Wilhoit with 11 each. But every guy that stepped on the floor tonight contributed.”

TUESDAY'S BOYS BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS

  • CVCA 90, NORTHWEST 68 Senior LaVelle Sharpe Jr. scored 22 points Tuesday night to lead the visiting Royals (20-1, 14-0) to an undefeated record in the Principals Athletic Conference.

  • Sophomore Charley Levak (18 points), sophomore Tony Collins (13 points) and junior Niles Nuru (12 points) also reached double figures for CVCA. Sophomore Connor Gray contributed eight points, and sophomore Joey Kopec and senior Ricky Levak both scored six points.

  • “I got my first technical foul in probably two years,” CVCA coach Matt Futch said. “It wasn’t anything like I was upset at an official. I was frustrated by our team. We turned the ball over once or twice, which is uncharacteristic. I hit the ball in frustration [and got a T].

  • “... Our guys responded to that in a way a veteran team would do, and we are not a veteran team in that regard. We are playing six sophomores out of the 11 that we are playing. The way they responded in the first half was great. We took a 10-point lead into halftime. We were able to do some things that we like to do in the second half. To beat that team in that fashion at this time of the year is impressive.”

  • Senior Ian Ziegler scored 23 points for Northwest (13-6, 10-3) and sophomore Tristan Pennington had 16 points.

  • “Anytime you go on the road to Northwest, you are going against their culture and their tradition, and they are well coached,” Futch said. “You gotta be prepared. I thought our guys were prepared.”

Barberton forward De'Arion Holley shoots over Revere's Uriah Pulliam in the first half, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024.
  • BARBERTON 60, REVERE 56 Junior De’Arion Holley scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to guide the visiting Magics (18-2, 12-1) past the Minutemen (13-8, 8-5) in a Suburban League American Conference game.

  • “We all came into this game with a chip on our shoulder because they beat us earlier in the season,” said Holley, who made three 3-pointers. “They are the only team that we have lost to in our conference, so we came in with a chip on our shoulder and executed well.”

  • Barberton junior Kameryn Kennerly made 8 of his 10 free throw shots in the fourth quarter and finished with 19 points and three assists.

  • “This year I have really focused on trying to get better at making free throws and I am one of the better free throw shooters on the team,” Kennerly said. “Down the stretch, my teammates look to me to hit those big shots and I have been doing that every game.”

  • Barberton senior Kenny Larry scored six points, seniors Mike Jones and Robert Davis each had four points and five rebounds and junior Kardiay Tyler had four points and two assists.

  • “This is the same thing we have done all year,” Barberton coach Chad Hazard said. “At the end of the game, our team is not scared. We do this every game. We have more experience with close games than anybody in the country. I truly believe that. Honestly, every game is close. I didn’t coach a good one. I didn’t think either defense was very good tonight, and we hang our hat on the defensive end. We did not guard well. They are a tough matchup for us because we have two bigs and they go with only one big. ... They shoot the ball really well.”

  • Senior Carson Banks paced Revere with 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Senior Conner Groce scored 17 points. Banks and Groce both made three 3s. Senior Greg Cochran had six points and three blocks.

  • “Our guys played hard,” Revere coach Dean Rahas said. “We competed well. The margin for error was pretty small and we had a couple of things not go our way. They hit their free throws at the end and that was really the difference.”
