Report: Ex-Red Sox manager candidate to be Dombrowski's GM in Philly originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Sam Fuld missing out on the Boston Red Sox manager job may have been a blessing in disguise.

The Philadelphia Phillies are set to hire Fuld as their general manager, NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury reported Tuesday. The hire would make Fuld the No. 2 to new Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

A Durham, N.H., native whose eight-year major league career spanned four teams, Fuld was in the running to become the Red Sox' next manager this offseason and reportedly was the runner-up to eventual choice Alex Cora.

Instead, Fuld will make the sizable leap from Phillies major league player information coordinator to general manager. While Fuld's name had been floated for several manager openings, a GM job seemed unlikely until the Phillies' surprise move Tuesday.

But Philly seems intent on a front-office overhaul, which started with hiring Dombrowski after he helped build the 2018 World Series champion Red Sox.

The 39-year-old Fuld will inject some young blood into the GM role as the Phillies look to end a nine-year postseason drought.
