MLB draft's No. 2 pick Druw Jones injures shoulder in first pro practice with Diamondbacks
Druw Jones' MLB career is off to a tough start.
The Arizona Diamondbacks rookie selected with the No. 2 pick in last week's draft sustained a shoulder injury in Arizona on Tuesday during his first practice session as a pro. Diamondbacks farm director Josh Barfield confirmed the news to the Arizona Republic. Jones suffered the injury while taking batting practice.
“He was just taking (batting practice) and took a regular round of BP and felt something in his shoulder on his second-to-last swing,” Barfield told the Republic.
The extent of Jones' injury wasn't immediately clear, but Barfield said that his season is over, according to the Republic. He's already undergone an MRI and is scheduled to meet with team physician Dr. Gary Waslewski on Wednesday, according to Barfield. He didn't disclose the results of the MRI, but didn't rule out surgery, which could extend Jones' absence into next season.

Jones, 18, won Gatorade High School Player of the Year as an outfielder for Georgia's Wesleyan School. MLB.com rates him as the best prospect in his draft class with a mix of highly rated speed, power and defense that recalls his father's elite talent. He reportedly agreed to an $8.19 million signing bonus with the Diamondbacks.
