Mitchell Trubisky named to Pro Bowl, first Bears' quarterback to go in 30 years

With Jared Goff now unavailable to play in the Pro Bowl due to the Los Angeles Rams being in Super Bowl LIII, the NFL has named a replacement: Chicago Bears’ Mitchell Trubisky.

Trubisky is the sixth member of the 2018 Bears to be named to the annual All-Star game. But his selection is notable for historical reasons.

Almost incredibly, Trubisky becomes the first Bears quarterback to be named to the Pro Bowl since 1985, when Jim McMahon represented the team. That was McMahon’s only Pro Bowl nod in his career, and was seemingly more a consequence of the team he played on than his own performance: Chicago was 11-0 in games McMahon started, but he had 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Trubisky, who was born nearly a decade after McMahon’s Pro Bowl season, completed two-thirds of his pass attempts this season, with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Struggles at key position

The Bears’ 33-year drought between Pro Bowl quarterbacks is startling. Though Jay Cutler was in Chicago for eight years, he was never chosen for the game, even as a replacement (Cutler’s only Pro Bowl year was 2008, with Denver).

Every other team in the NFL has had at least one quarterback in the annual showcase since 1995. Now that the Bears have broken their streak of futility, the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens are on the clock: Dan Marino was the last Dolphins’ QB to make it, 23 years ago, and Vinny Testaverde made it for the Ravens in 1996, the team’s inaugural season.
