Mitch Haniger placed on injured list with horrific-sounding testicle injury

Seattle Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger suffered a pretty gruesome injury Thursday. The 28-year-old Haniger was placed on the injured list Friday with a — look away if you’re squeamish — ruptured testicle.

Haniger’s injury was self inflicted. He fouled a ball off his groin during Thursday’s game. Haniger had to leave the contest and was replaced by Mac Williamson in the seventh inning.

The Mariners initially said the injury was a lower-body contusion. After the game, they amended that to testicle contusion. A day later, the team is referring to it as a ruptured testicle.

It’s unclear how long the injury will keep him out of action. Haniger was placed on the 10-day injured list so he can recover.

Haniger is far from the only Major League Baseball player to suffer a testicular injury. Adrián Beltré missed two weeks after he was hit in the groin with a ball in 2009. Beltré had some unfortunate swelling with that injury too. In 2016, Baltimore Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph had to miss time with the testicular injury after a ball was hit into his groin while he was catching.

There are more, but you get the point.

In 63 games, Haniger is hitting .220/.314/.463, with 15 home runs. He’ll take some time to recover and hopefully come back to the field wearing the strongest cup possible.
