Mississippi State women's basketball 2024-25 SEC schedule: Vic Schaefer returning with Texas

STARKVILLE — Coach Vic Schaefer will be returning to Humphrey Coliseum during the 2024-25 season.

The SEC announced its home and road opponents Tuesday for the upcoming women's basketball season and for Mississippi State, it includes hosting Texas.

MSU's other home-only opponents are Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. The Bulldogs will travel to face Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Mississippi State's home-and-away opponent is Auburn. It's the first time MSU will face the Tigers twice in a regular season since 2019-20.

The release by the SEC came as the conference prepares to add Texas and Oklahoma this school year. The Bulldogs and Oklahoma have met only twice, with the most recent game in 2021. MSU and Texas have faced off five times, the latest being in 2018.

Schaefer is entering his fifth season at the helm for the Longhorns. He previously spent eight seasons (2012-2020) at Mississippi State, which went to the national title game twice (2017 and 2018).

He left MSU for Texas after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 postseason. The Bulldogs were 27-6 overall and 13-3 in SEC play in his final season. Mississippi State was expected to be among the top seeds in the NCAA tournament.

Sam Purcell, who is entering his third season at MSU, is the third head coach for the Bulldogs since Schaefer's departure. He led them to the NCAA tournament in 2023 before falling short this year.
