Miracle on Titans Way: Fan's lost wedding ring found

Halfway through his two-and-a-half hour drive home from Sunday afternoon’s Tennessee Titans game, season-ticket holder Chad Davis made a stomach-turning discovery. He didn’t feel his wedding band on his ring finger when he went to fiddle with it.

Davis pulled over along Interstate 24 and frantically began scouring his car for a navy blue tungsten ring with a Titans emblem engraved on it. When he couldn’t find it, Davis realized the ring must have fallen off during the game.

“I felt sick to my stomach,” Davis told Yahoo Sports. “I didn’t think there was any chance I would get it back.”

What stung Davis the most wasn’t the monetary loss. The ring had sentimental value to him.

Davis, 46, has been a passionate Titans fan since the franchise relocated from Houston almost a quarter century ago. He jokes that he has even “bled for the Titans” since he has the two-toned sword from the team’s logo tattooed on his forearm.

On Valentine’s Day almost two years ago, Davis’ wife-to-be gave him the Titans season tickets that he had never been willing to splurge on for himself. That same year, before their October 2020 wedding, Jess also surprised Davis with his Titans-themed ring.

“That’s the ring I got married in,” Davis said. “It means everything to me.”

When Davis arrived home from the game Sunday evening, he immediately came clean about the missing ring to his wife. Jess was understanding but didn’t waste the chance to make her husband squirm for a few minutes.

“Of course she gave me s*** about it,” Davis said a chuckle. “She was like, ‘Oh yeah, uh-huh, I’m sure you just lost it. But she was just giving me a hard time.”

The couple planned to order a new ring until Davis’ 21-year-old son intervened. Knowing that his dad had a strong following of Titans fans on Twitter, Davis’ son suggested that he post about the missing ring.

Davis thought there was little chance the ring would be recovered from a 69,000-seat stadium, but he agreed to try. At 8:23 p.m. on Sunday, he tweeted a photo of the ring and the section where he was sitting.

“Please share in case someone found it,” he wrote. “I would pay to recover it.”

What happened next left Davis shocked and grateful. Friends began retweeting what Davis wrote and tagging the Titans in their tweets. Pretty soon, Titans executives were reaching out to the team’s senior director of stadium events and experience to see if she could organize a hunt.

At 9:04 p.m., Ashlee Stokely contacted Davis to ask for his exact row and seat number. When he responded minutes later, she then deployed two security officers to search for the missing ring around Section 202, Row U, Seats 3 and 4.

Incredibly, in the dark and as Nissan Stadium saw a light dusting of snow, one of the security officers spotted the ring. Ken Nelson found it in the aisle a couple of rows below where Davis was sitting, the same place that he had been high-fiving fellow fans on his way out of the stadium after the Titans’ 34-3 rout of the Dolphins.

Late Sunday night, Stokely tweeted at Davis, “Chad!! We found it!! Email me and I will give you instructions on how to pick this up tomorrow!” The Titans CEO also tweeted a photo of the ring and promised to have someone get in touch with Davis.

“People lose valuables often, and we try our hardest to find them,” Kate Guerra, the Titans' vice president of marketing and communications, told Yahoo Sports. “Sometimes we do, sometimes we don’t. But when we do, especially when it’s something that valuable to someone, it means a lot.”

Davis intends to dispatch a friend to the stadium Monday to pick up the ring for him. He is thankful to the many people who helped him find a ring he thought was forever lost.

“I sent that tweet in desperation, hoping, maybe, in the slim chance it was found, it would get back to me,” he said. “I’m amazed by the response.”
