Miller lifts Firestone to boys basketball victory; CVCA, Walsh win girls league titles

BOYS BASKETBALL

Firestone 50, Barberton 48

Jemyrin Miller's layup with 4.1 seconds to go propelled the Falcons (7-11) to their fourth win in a row Wednesday night.

Firestone seniors Daniel Harper and Donavan Robinson scored 12 points apiece, Miller added nine, sophomore Johnathan White had six and senior Dondi Haper had five.

"They were pretty resilient to get this win," Falcons coach DeAndre Walker said. "We had several guys step up, including Chris Foster and Johnathan White. I liked the way we played defense."

Tony Fox scored 19 points for the Magics (6-12). Andrew Stefan, Ben Huth and Kaige Lowe chipped in eight points each.

Barberton entered the game after earning a 69-64 win over host Aurora on Tuesday when Fox scored 24 points and Huth (18) made six 3-pointers.

St. Vincent-St. Mary 77, Cleveland Heights Lutheran East 60

The visiting Irish won with three players in double figures: Lance Hayes (21 points), Sencire Harris (19) and Ramar Pryor (12).

Walsh Jesuit 71, Euclid 67

The Warriors (15-2) pulled away behind Rico Pickett (22 points). Zach Halligan and Max Matta chipped in 12 each in the win.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Walsh Jesuit 53, Padua 28

The Warriors (16-5, 8-0) left no doubt who the Crown Conference champs were in this win over the the Bruins (10-12, 4-4). Kara Courtad (12 points, 11 points), Taylor Angielski (11 points) and Megan Taraba (six points, 16 rebounds) led the way for Walsh, but it was what the Warriors did without the ball that told the story.

Padua went 13:12 without scoring a basket and the Bruins were outrebounded 54-24, including an incredible 32 offensive rebounds.

"We played packed-in defense and made them play solid offense," Walsh coach Maggie Ferrando said. "We didn't want to beat ourselves. Credit to Padua for making adjustments, but we said, 'Let's just D up, grind it out and play solid defense.'"

CVCA 78, Orrville 42

The Royals (16-5, 11-1) claimed their third consecutive Principals Athletic Conference title at Bob Knight Gymnasium in Orrville. CVCA shared the crown with Northwest. CVCA rushed out a 14-3 lead after three minutes and was never challenged. The Royals drained a season-high 18 3-pointers in the win.

Kylie Bettinger made eight 3s and finished with a 24 points. Joi Williams scored 27 points and Gia Casalinova added 14 points. Katelyn Harabedian grabbed 10 rebounds.

Orrville was led by Elia Gonzales (12 points).

Aurora 57, Twinsburg 39

Ava Ryncarz (27 points) was a beast once again for the Greenmen and Sam Stask had 13. Sophie Adick scored 12 and Makayla Busicnki had 11 for the Tigers.

Brunswick 53, North Royalton 15

Journey Hildebrand scored 13 points and Faith Vlcek had 11 for the Blue Devils.

Hudson 57, Tallmadge 40

Delaney DiGeronimo (17 points) and Ali Menendez (12) paced the Explorers (12-9). The Blue Devils were led by Maya Dexter (13).

Revere 47, Brecksville 18

Revere (14-7) was strong behind another solid effort from Audrey Livesay (13 points). The Bees saw Carrie Coyer-Westerberg score 14.

Stow 47, Canton McKinley 46

In a wild nonleague game, Stow knocked out McKinley behind Kristin Chmielewski (24 points). Paris Stokes led McKinley with 22.

Kent Roosevelt 44, Springfield 33

Ariana Crockett (11 points) led the Rough Riders over the Spartans, who were paced by Ellie Gardinier's eight points.

Lake 65, Firestone 32

The Blue Streaks (6-16) had a three-headed force in Serenitee Johnson (14 points) Abbey Hance (12) and Alayna Horning (12). The Falcons were paced by Kiara Smith and Aalivia Mullins, who each had 13.

Solon 60, Wadsworth 58

The Grizzlies (14-7) had three chances to tie the Comets but couldn’t find that last basket in a nonleague game. Regan Simpson led Wadsworth with 19 points. Morgan Blackford (23), Chyanne Hatcher (21) and Mackenzie Blackford (12) led Solon.

WRESTLING

STVM 57, Hoban 12; STVM 48, Copley 14; Copley 33, Hoban 30

Elliot Alessia (144 pounds) won both his matches for the Fighting Irish and claimed his 100th career victory in the process. STVM's Bryce Skinner (126), Anthony John Paul (138), Mason Gruic (150), Ryan Price (165), Bryson Getz (215) and Andy Vanscoy (285) also won twice.

Copley had double winners in Javaan Yarbrough (106), Zane Van Voorhis (132) and Devonn Nixon (157). Syncere Hill (175) and Corian Grimes (190) won twice for Hoban.
