Mile posts: Items on Paityn Noe, Lexi Brown, Spencer Moon, Janette Schraft, Gable Sieperda, Mattison Plummer, Madison Brouwer, Missy Rock

There has been no slowdown for Arkansas true freshman Paityn Noe even as the calendar changes to November.

The former Ballard (Huxley) great placed fifth overall at the women’s SEC Cross Country Championship in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday while helping the No. 11 (by U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Razorbacks take runner-up team honors with 59 points. Noe covered the 6-kilometer course in 19 minutes, 43.7 seconds to lead Arkansas and lead off this edition of the WEEKEND UPDATE of the best performances by Iowa-based collegiate and postcollegiate distance runners and triathletes.

It was Noe's second 6K cross country race of her career. She was 6.1 seconds ahead of fifth-place teammate Sydney Thorvaldson. Florida's Parker Valby, the reigning 5,000-meter NCAA champion on the track, ran 18:37.5 to defend her title.

Noe broke the Iowa Class 3A state records for the 3,000 and 1,500 meters on the track while also becoming the first Iowa girl to break 17 minutes for 5K at the state meet last November.

Missouri senior Kelsey Schweizer placed 93rd overall in 22:15.6. The former Dowling Catholic prep was the No. 7 runner for the ninth-place Tigers.

Moving to NCAA Division III, where the third-ranked Wartburg College women captured their fifth consecutive American Rivers Conference title, but not without a strong fight from host Central College on Saturday. The Knights picked up all-conference honors from six athletes, including conference champion Lexi Brown, but the Dutch put four runners in the top 10 to make it a competitive fight before Wartburg prevailed, 27-37.

Brown, a former New London prep, continued her run as Wartburg's team leader by taking the individual 6K championship in Pella in 21:57.8. Brown is a returning All-American. Breaking up the Wartburg juggernaut was a pair of Central seniors. Former Aplington-Parkersburg prep Megan Johnson led the Dutch for the first time this season, taking runner-up honors in 22:00.3. Johnson was just ahead of season team leader and fellow All-American Caroline McMartin, who was third in 22:02.7.

Then, it was Wartburg taking charge of the team race by having the next three finishers: Junior Shaelyn Hostager (22:12.3), junior Ellie Meyer (22:14.4) and senior Aubrie Fisher (22:14.5). All are All-Americans, with Fisher a two-time NCAA steeplechase champion. Hostager is a former Dubuque Hempstead prep while Meyer ran for Iowa Falls-Alden and Fisher competed for AGSWR (Ackley).

No. 17 Central grabbed the next two spots, including a seventh from junior and former Danville prep Addison Parrott (22:17.7) to finish with its highest conference finish since 1986.

The Knights closed out the team title when sophomore Haley Meyer, a former Kee (Lansing) prep, crossed the line in 11th in 22:58.9. Also earning all-conference honors for the Knights was senior and former Saint Ansgar prep Addy Carlson (14th, 23:10.0).

Simpson's third-place team with 92 points was paced by junior and former Dallas Center-Grimes runner Lara Kallem in ninth. Kallem ran 22:40.5 to repeat as an all-conference performer and post the best finish by a Storm athlete since Catie Ellingson in 2010. Junior teammate and former Valley prep Teah Miller also earned all-conference with a 13th-place finish in 23:03.2, followed by senior and former Indianola prep Ashley Rockhold in 16th in 23:23.4.

Former Iowa Falls-Alden prep and true freshman Teah Miller paced Luther College with a 13th-place effort and all-conference finish after running 23:03.2.

Central then took three of the final four spots in the top 20. Junior Sara Goodenbour ran a new best for the distance with a 23:24.9. The former Cedar Falls prep was 17th. Sophomore Peyton Steffen, a former Marion runner, was 19th in 23:29.4. Sophomore Leah Bontrager, who ran attended Hillcrest Academy and is from Wellman, ended up 20th in 23:33.8. All in the top 20 earned all-conference honors.

The No. 7 Wartburg men continued to stay one title ahead of their female counterparts by easily capturing their seventh consecutive ARC championship. The Knights had nine of 20 all-conference athletes, tying their school record for most honorees.

After senior Christopher Collet repeated as 8K league champion in 24:43.1, it was all Iowa natives who were next to cross the line wearing the orange and black colors of the Knights. Junior Jack Kinzer placed fourth in 25:08.3, followed by junior Sam Schmitz in 25:09.8. Junior Jacob Green ended up eighth in 25:20.4, followed by sophomore Shane Erb (25:20.9) and sophomore Lance Sobaski (25:24.9) in the top 10. Kinzer is a former Liberty High athlete. Schmitz is a former Johnston prep. Green ran for Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Erb ran for Marion while Sobaski is a former Washington prep.

Three more Knights gained all-conference honors. It was sophomore and former Ankeny Centennial prep Tyler Schermerhorn who grabbed 11th in 25:32.2. Two spots back was true freshman and former Western Dubuque runner Isaiah Hammerand in 13th place in 25:42.7. Junior Michael Goodenbour, a former Cedar Falls prep, took 14th in 25:43.0.

Simpson College senior Spencer Moon became only the fourth athlete in school history to earn four all-conference honors when he finished runner-up in 24:48.9. The only other Simpson athlete to do so was Danny Bauer from 1981-84. Moon is a former South Central Calhoun prep.

Central fifth-year senior Caleb Silver continued his strong form by placing third, his best ARC finish, in 24:54.4. The former BCLUW (Conrad) prep and All-American last November helped lead the Dutch to a runner-up team finish with 63 points. Senior teammate Noah Jorgenson earned his second top-10 finish at conference by placing seventh in 25:17.3. He is a former Sidney prep. Simpson senior Ean Warrick placed 16th to earn all-conference honors for the first time as the ARC went to 20 honorees for the first time this year. Warrick is a former Ames prep.

Third-place Loras (76) was paced by junior Julian Watson's sixth-place finish in 25:11.3.

Shifting to NCAA Division I and the Big 12 Championships hosted by Iowa State in Ames, where the Cyclones finished third in the women's race and fourth in the men's field against stiff competition that included the addition of cross country power BYU. The No. 17 Cyclone women scored 70 points to trail only No. 4 BYU (35) and No. 6 Oklahoma State (39) and place in the top three for the fourth consecutive season. Earning all-conference honors for the second time in her career was former Glenwood and East Mills prep Janette Schraft. The senior ran a 30-second best over the flat, fast 6K course to break 21 minutes for the third time in her career to place 12th. Schraft ran 20:16.2 as the third Cyclone over the finish line. Former Johnston prep and redshirt sophomore Bella Heikes finished 32nd as the No. 6 runner for Iowa State in 20:47.4. One spot behind her was junior and former Charles City prep Kiki Connell in 20:48.3. Both broke 21 minutes for the first time. Former North Liberty prep and sophomore Ashlyn Keeney was 42nd in 21:13.0.

Cyclone redshirt senior and former Central Lyon-GLR prep Gable Sieperda had his best race of the season, moving past Cyclone teammates Sanele Masondo, Ezekiel Rop and Rodgers Kiplimo over the final mile to finish as the Iowa State men's No. 2 runner in 23:41.0. That time is his best for 8K by two seconds. Sieperda, who has one season of eligibility left if he chooses it, was 26th. Redshirt junior Tim Sindt captured 32nd in 23:54.5, missing her best for the distance by one second. Sindt is a former Ankeny High prep. Redshirt sophomore Quinton Orr ran 24:42.7 for 61st. Orr is a former Humboldt prep.

The No. 17 Cyclones scored 114 points to trail only No. 2 Oklahoma State (25), No. 3 BYU (55) and No. 6 Texas (70).

Moving to the Missouri Valley Conference championships hosted by Belmont University in Nashville on Friday. The Drake men captured their second MVC title in three years with 41 points, 30 ahead of Bradley. Sophomore Jake Turner was the leader in third place in 24:37.1 over 8K. No Bulldogs on the varsity are from Iowa.

The fourth-place Drake women had the individual champion in senior Brooke Mullins, who became the first Bulldog women's champion since Ashley Anklam in 2006. Finishing three spots in back of Mullins with her best finish ever at the Valley event was Illinois State junior Mattison Plummer. The former Southeast Polk prep ran the fourth-fastest time in school history for 6K with a 20:50.7 effort. Running as the third Redbird was junior and former Valley prep Lauren Schulze in 21st place. Schulze ran a new best of 21:53.59 for the distance. Illinois State was third in the team race with 93 points.

The Northern Iowa women placed eighth and leading the Panthers again was junior and former Waverly-Shell Rock prep Emma Hoins. Hoins ran a new best of 21:39.8 to earn all-conference honors for the first time in 14th place. Fellow junior and former Guthrie Center prep Kate Crawford took 26th in a season-best 22:07.8. Junior and former Cedar Rapids Kennedy prep Ella Poppenhagen placed 47th in 22:42.6 while the final Panther scorer was junior and former Aplington-Parkersburg prep Sophia Jungling in 22:52.5.

The Panther men placed 10th and leading them again was junior and former Tipton prep Caleb Shumaker in 28th place in 25:37.3. Junior and former Bellevue prep Brady Griebel was 50th in 26:14.6.

True freshman Madison Brouwer earned Newcomer of the Championship award while helping the South Dakota women capture the Summit League Championships on Saturday in Brookings, S.D. The former Sibley-Ocheyedan prep placed fourth overall in 21:17.52 for the 6K race, just edging junior teammate Abrielle Jirele by .12 of a second. The Coyotes won their sixth Summit League title with 50 points, five ahead of host South Dakota State.

Leading sixth-place Omaha was sophomore and former Valley prep Kamryn Ensley. Ensley placed 22nd in 22:18.32. Ensley finished fourth in the Summit a season ago. Freshman and former Osage prep Katelyn Johnson placed 41st overall in 23:06.64 and was the No. 4 runner for the Mavericks. The final scorer was senior Emily Treptow, a former Jesup runner, in 44th and in a new best of 23:16.99, according to coach Cliff Cisar.

In the men's 8K, freshman and former Sioux City North prep Will Lohr finished 26th for champion South Dakota State, which won a tiebreaker over North Dakota State. Lohr ran 25:43.99.

Turning to the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis., where Iowa finished 10th in the team race and junior Max Murphy returned from an injury to take 34th in the 8K. The conference runner-up in the 5,000 and 10,000 outdoors ran 25:21.3. He is a former Pleasant Valley prep. Senior and former Cedar Rapids Prairie prep Jack Pendergast was next for the Hawkeyes in 61st place in 26:01.0. Sophomore and former Cedar Falls prep Brayden Burnett ran the best race of his career - 26:03.7 - for 65th place and third on the team. Dominant Wisconsin won with 19 points and Badgers junior Bob Liking claimed the title in 23:56.8.

The Iowa women were 14th and senior Abby Ryon closed her career by leading the Hawkeyes for the first time this season. The former Mount Pleasant prep ran 22:49.3 for 68th place. Senior and former Sioux City Heelan prep Amber Aesoph was four spots back in 72nd place in 22:52.7. Sophomore Jalyssa Blazek, a former Turkey Valley (Jackson Junction) prep, made her Big Ten debut and placed 80th in 22:57.6.

On to the Conference USA Cross Country Championships in Bowling Green, Ky., where the Liberty University women's team claimed second with 61 points, nine behind Middle Tennessee. Running fifth for the Flames women's team was redshirt junior and former Mid-Prairie prep star Marie Hostetler. Hostetler was 23rd 23:00.1.

At the Patriot League Championships in Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday, Boston University true freshman Adrienne Buettner-Cable helped lead the Terriers to a runner-up team finish. The former Des Moines Roosevelt standout was the No. 4 runner for BU in 13th place in 22:46.3 to earn all-conference honors. The Terriers' score was 40, 11 behind Army West Point.

Ending cross country with NCAA Division III, where junior Adam Loenser helped lead the No. 2-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse men's cross country team to its sixth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Saturday at Prescott, Wis. The junior and former Clear Lake prep was the No. 5 runner for the Eagles and seventh overall in 24:57.6 over the 8K course. La Crosse scored 22 points to down UW-Whitewater by 19 points.

The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's cross country team had six of the top eight runners at the SCIAC Championship on Saturday in Riverside, Calif. Finishing 26th and the No. 9 runner for CMS was freshman and former Des Moines Roosevelt prep Sally Gaskell. Gaskell ran 24:02.9.

Finishing with road racing, where several Iowans and runners on Iowa teams were taking aim at earning qualifying times for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando, Fla., in February. Former Wartburg 14-time NCAA champion Missy (Buttry) Rock came the closest, finishing just three seconds shy of earning the mark during Saturday's Indianapolis Monumental Marathon. The former Shenandoah-Essex prep finished fourth overall among the women in 2:37:03. Rock now lives in Prior Lake, Minn.

The top Iowa man was former Pleasant Valley prep Devin Allbaugh in 25th place. The Running Wild Elite men's team coordinator ran a new best of 2:23:45 for the No. 2 time in club history. Allbaugh resides in Bettendorf. Runablaze Iowa's Cody Baele, coming off a win two weeks earlier at the IMT Des Moines Half Marathon, ran 2:23:59 for 28th overall. He lives in Des Moines. RWE athlete and former Davenport Assumption prep Dan Froeschle was 29th in 2:24:30. That time is No. 3 in club history. His brother, Steve, also a former Assumption prep, ran 2:27:57 for 46th. Squeezing between them was former Iowa resident William Graham in 36th place in 2:26:13. The winner was Lyle O'Brien in 2:15:39. The men had to break run 2:18 or better to earn a qualifying time.

In the extremely competitive half marathon, former Dowling Catholic prep Jason Thomas of the Runablaze Iowa team placed 69th overall in 1:09:13. Thomas resides in West Des Moines. Nine spots back was former Iowa City resident Jay Welp of the RWE team in 1:10:37. Welp now lives in Illinois. Runablaze's MacCoy Benzen of West Des Moines ran 1:10:58, just missing his personal record by four seconds.

Kelsey Allbaugh of the RWE team ran 1:23:33 for the No. 3 time in club history. The women's team coordinator resides in Bettendorf.
