Mike Glennon gives critics fodder with pick-six on second pass with Bears

Mike Glennon’s first pass as a member of the Chicago Bears was a little behind Cameron Meredith, and Meredith dropped it.

And that was by far the highlight of Glennon’s first series in the preseason.

For all the Bears fans that scratched their heads over the Bears paying Glennon a three-year, $45 million deal after he backed up Jameis Winston with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his second pass did nothing to make anyone happy. Glennon, under a little pressure from his left side, floated up a pass without much clarity into a bunch of Denver Broncos defenders. Cornerback Chris Harris picked it off and took it all the way back for a touchdown.

How’s that for a first impression?

Harris was waiting for the pass like a punt returner, mostly because Meredith didn’t do a great job on his deep route to clear out Harris. Still, it was a poor decision by Glennon to force the pass when his intended receiver wasn’t open. On Chicago’s second drive, the Bears called a run, another run, and then Glennon’s third-down pass was batted down and the punt team came on.

Glennon has spent the offseason as the starter, even though the team drafted Mitch Trubisky with the second overall pick. The entire situation, with one quarterback making $15 million a year and another being drafted No. 2 overall, is a bit strange. Most people think Glennon is going to give up the job to Trubisky at some point, though Glennon has confidently said this is his year.

In order to keep the job for a majority of the season, Glennon better not have too many more moments like his second pass as a Bear.
