Mid-Valley high school football: 5 takeaways from Week 3

The high school football season continued for the third week, and teams are starting to define themselves.

There are six more weeks left in the regular season, and teams will try to position themselves for a postseason run.

Here are five key takeaways from the third week of football in the Mid-Valley.

1: Sprague falls to Sheldon

Sprague lost 50-13 to Sheldon in the Special District 1 opener Friday.

The Olympians fall to 0-3 this season with the setback.

“We are disappointed even though those are good teams, we beat ourselves again,” said Sprague junior Kenya Johnson, who scored a touchdown. “We have lots we need to work on but it’s mostly getting over the adversity that hits us.”

Sprague will next play at Roseburg at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Olympians return home against South Medford at 7 p.m. Sept. 28.

2: South Salem remains unbeaten

South Salem cruised past Grants Pass 40-6 on Friday.

Athan Palmateer threw two touchdown passes and rushed for two touchdowns in the victory for the Saxons.

South Salem improves to 3-0 this season, including 1-0 in the league and 2-0 on the road.

“I think it’s all of the preparation that we’ve put in. We worked together all offseason with the same goal in mind,” Palmateer said. “To be honest, we didn’t execute as we should’ve tonight on offense, we had too many mental errors. When we bring it all together, we’re gonna be very tough to stop.”

The Saxons next play at South Medford at 7 p.m. Friday.

South Salem returns home against West Salem at 7:15 p.m. Sept. 29.

3: North Salem cruises to 3-0

North Salem beat Roseburg 39-13 on Friday for their first road win of the season.

TC Manumaleuna threw two touchdown passes, and Jamahl Wilson rushed for two touchdowns for the Vikings.

North Salem is 3-0 this season overall and 1-0 in the league.

The Vikings next host North Medford at 7:15 p.m. Friday in another league matchup.

4: West Salem drops game at North Medford

West Salem lost 33-12 on Friday at North Medford in their league opener.

With the loss, the Titans fall to 0-3 this season.

After two straight road games, West Salem next will host Grants Pass at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The next time the Titans play outside the Salem-Keizer area is in the ninth week at Sheldon on Oct. 27.

5: Dallas wins second straight

The Dallas football team beat Lebanon 36-20 on Friday night.

Five Dragons players scored touchdowns, including Zayvian Webster, who rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown, and Isaiah Mosley, who had 50 yards and a touchdown.

Dallas, which started the season with a loss at Silverton, improves to 2-1 this season.

The Dragons next host West Albany at 7 p.m. Friday.
